#1 Flamed out.....

Fly safely out there. Today I got an eye-opening reminder of exactly why we train the way we do.

Climbing out of Houston at 2000 ft, I hear a WHAP! and a buffet in the flight controls.....I thought for sure a bird had hit the plane, then I feel the ERJ yaw to the left.

Next I see the Engine Indications for our #1 engine decreasing to idle values and the "E1 OUT" warning appears. Long story short, for a presently unknown reason the engine decided to fail. We recieved box vectors for about 15 minutes while we burned off some fuel and completed the appropriate checklists. We landed relatviely uneventfully under the power of our remaining engine after executing a successful ILS approach with ceilings at about 600 OVC. It was my leg and the captain was running the checklists for me. I think I had the easier job, as running an expanded Engine Failure Precautionary shutdown checklist isn't exactly easy, especially when you want to get the airplane on the ground as soon as possible.

So I guess these supposedly ultra-reliable jet engines aren't as bulletproof as some would have you believe.. 1000 hrs in skyhawks and I never had anything like this.... :) The mechanics' best guesses were that a gear in the Engine's Fuel Pumping and Metering Unit failed, starving the engine of fuel. There was no visible damage to the engine on the walk around, it still had full oil and no fluid leakage on the nacelle.

Just thought I'd share this little "war story" with jetcareers....

Just remember, Alc'

You're way overpaid :sarcasm: :)

Actually... Good job bro!

Awesome job! It goes to show how great training, combined with lots of experience (even if was flying and/or instructing for 1000 hours in 172's) becomes so much more important at those critical times.

Damn nice job man!
Training can get very boring, going through everything a bilion times, but nice to have when things go TU

Yeah, I busted out my can of spam as a celebratory luncheon on the ensuing flight to Mexico.....I'm just glad the engine decided to call it quits over the coastal plains of southeast texas rather than a few thousand feet from the base of a jagged mexican montaña. Thanks for the props.

Luckily we were pretty light with only 20 pax and under 1000 lbs of cargo, in a 37-seater to boot. Single engine performance was not much of an issue. I was still getting a solid 1000 fpm out of it, we were whizzing around at 240+ in the box pattern to burn as much fuel as we could. Glad this happened to me in an RJ, not a baron.

Wow, I really think they need to cut your pay - you make way too much money to be just a checklist doer :sarcasm: :D

Good job on that!

great job but you forgot to do one thing. You forgot to put a call into the media so that they could have had live coverge of a "CRJ landing with only one engine"....gasp!!! We've now missed at least two hours worth of reporters commentary on what the pax must be feeling at this point and how you were now dumping fuel. An expose..."Are CRJs REALLY safe?" Man you really dropped the ball on this one :)

Err... ERJ... Not CRJ.

Way to stay cool up there. I've always wondered, if it were to happen, would I rather be flying or trying to run QRHs. It says a lot about your skill that the captain let you keep it for the landing.

Yeah, but you know the media would first report an Airbus 717 CERJ Express Liner.

Nice job. I know of a few guys around MAG who've lost engines. I'm hoping to stay on the "I've never had it" side of the fence.

sound of knocking on wood

You KNOW it's just one of JO's ways of saving money. That way you are competative and can win bids for more flying.

Yeah, pretty much. Same thing with MX ... he doesn't account for spending any money on that when bidding new flying, since everything gets pencil whipped anyway.
