It was still in the era where some "express" outstation terminals weren't much more than a 1 room building, with maybe a partition for the "secure" area.

In this case, it was quite the spectacle.

Maybe some bail bondsmen or title companies could get into a new line of business: "buddy pass escrow."

Appropriate buddy behavior is secured with collateral that will be forfeit if there's drama.

If everything works out, the bond is returned less a taste for the escrow company. If there's drama … I guess that could still be considered compensation from some angles, hrm.
