UA169 (VCE-EWR), aircraft or parts of it hit truck on I-95

Pretty wild video:

767-400 landing on 29. Runway 29 doesn’t have an ILS, but does have a 3° PAPI. Charted visuals and RNAVs. LDA is 6,501.

Supposedly they hit a light pole, which either hit the truck or caused a MLG wheel to detach and hit the truck. Driver is reported to have minor injuries. Plane landed without any additional issues.

Some MLG wheels went wizzing by in one frame :eek2:

Give that plane a Pan Am style name like “Clipper of the Pole.” They landed 29 with an LDA of 6,501’. Any B764 drivers around to say how tight that is for an aircraft that size?

Ya got beat

Idk about the 400 but for the 300 it’s on the shorter side but not something that’s impossible unless you’re ferrying a bunch of fuel. Hell we had the MD-11 landing on 29 up there and that thing comes in at Mach Jesus.

Last year in one our quarterly modules they went into great detail and spent a bunch of time talking about PAPI’s, TCH, etc. Seemed silly at the time but it came out that an airplane landed short of the runway. Thankfully no one got hurt. It can happen to any one of us especially when you start getting in your head about landing on a short runway, brake temps, etc.

Shortest field I've taken a -300 into off the top of my head is Maui, which is a bit longer at just under 7,000ft LDA. I remember we got the same performance data with F25 AB4 and F30 AB3 so I did the latter for a smoother experience. It was comfortable. 6450 is definitely "look closely at the numbers and don't screw around" territory but it shouldn't require extraordinary maneuvering to achieve. A bit like landing the 757 into SNA. Be careful, but a lot of people turn it into a way bigger deal than it should be.

I'm curious if the 767-400 is to the 76 what the 757-300 is to the 75, where the additional stretch turns it into a runway hog. We have it as a separate category so I've never flown one. Anyone here have experience with it? I need to check if we have charts for it in the EFB once I get home from vacation but I doubt it.

I just hope this doesn't start a whole new wave of "COVID hires scary" and/or "DEI bad" that taints the discussion from the useful information. I will say though everyone got lucky in this one.

I had to look; max manual on the MD; SL, at max landing is about 6700. Shorter than the -300 with max auto brakes.
