Air Safety Flight Academy

For the record, there is a new guy in charge who came over in March, right when it seems the other guy who used to work there left. I am by no means discrediting his account of how that place is, but there is a fair chance that it is different now. I also don't have the problem with teaching foreigners how to fly. Heck, for the right money I would even teach my relatives...lol.

As long as the same owner is there then I doubt anything has or will changed.

There is a corporate department AND a flight department and the two (anywhere) will be at odds concerning money and instructing. Owners like to make money and Instructors (most I know) want to make the best possible pilots.
I figure everyone has forgotten that owning a flight school is ultimately a business. And, of course, working at a flight school is different than instructing at your local FBO...meaning you actually have someone directing you (perish the thought). Teaching students is what flight instructing is...it is not building time so you can escape to the Regionals and then gripe about time off, or low pay.

It seems that some pilots will only be happy when Willy Wonka shows up at their door and offers them $75,000 a year to run the Hsawaknow (Wonkawash spelled backwards). And why wouldnt he? You have 200 hrs and your CFI...lol. (Pardon the cynicism)

If you think you would like to work at a place I would research it, listen to people, and then believe 0% of what you hear and 50% of what you see...then you will be properly (lol) informed. [In other words, go visit]

I have to ask, just want to make sure before.....well......Are you telling champcar to go visit AirSafety?

Oh no...I am just telling anyone else reading these posts to do their homework. Champcar already has his mind made up about the place, or at least the owner...but negativity from him can also make it easy for other pilots to give up on a place. (Not just Air Safety of course)

Old Dominion did the smart thing and visited. Cudos to him.

Too bad I spent two years there as a student and employee.

And THAT would be your foot in your mouth, Millerspal.....

I would just like to add my two cents to the discussion. I am currently an instructor at AirSafety Academy in Glendale. I think it is a great place to instruct, and you definitely get a ton of hours. They have tons of aircraft on the way, and the new director of training is outstanding. Some of my friends that I attended flight school with started instructing there months ago, when it was a small operation acquiring Indian and Chinese contracts, and said it was a mess because they were growing so fast. Now things are coming to fruition and beginning to gel. I would highly recommend coming here for the following reasons: Good pay, you make your own schedule, and they are moving in a positive direction. In my opinion, it is a great place to instruct.

Priceless....
FWIW, the last time I did any flying at Air Safety was in December of 07 for my instrument checkride. I have no idea who's there or how messed up it is...if it even is messed up. I saw the new building down on I-10 and the Loop 101...pretty nice, good looking simulators...but of course, you can put lipstick on a pig, but it's still a pig.

Check it out...make up your own mind...just be forewarned.

When you go to their website to check outt he aircraft they fly, all they have is information on the Cirrus. Im sure thats no tall they fly. I wonder why they dont have any other info =(

I figure they don't talk about Cessnas because everybody has Cessnas, but very few have a Cirrus. If I had a flight school and had 10 Seminoles and a couple King Airs to train in, I would talk all about the King Airs.

Their website has not been updated since 2006...No joke.

I believe there are 2 SR-20's onsite..down from the 6 or 7 or so when I got my PPL there in one of them. Mostly 152's / 172's. 2 Duchess' and 1 or 2 Seminoles....perhaps they got some more twins....

Anyone know what this article is all about? I heard they are only paying their CFI's 1/2 the pay rate until they get some more cash... sounds like crap to me...

Flight school takes holiday

Chinese clients fail to pay, causing cash-flow problem

The Arizona Republic
A flight school at Glendale Municipal Airport is taking "a long holiday" as it resolves a cash-flow shortage reportedly caused by lack of payments.
Air Safety Flight Academy, which employs 100 flight instructors and administrators, and teaches about 200 would-be pilots, is negotiating for $600,000 in payments from Chinese institutions, according to Peter Mountain, the academy's executive vice president.
"There is a cash-flow issue which we are busy overcoming as we speak," Mountain said Monday. The academy, which began operations five years ago, specializes in training international students, with about 80 percent of its business coming from Chinese airlines and universities. In an intense 12- to 13-month program, the school trains students as commercial- and airline-transport pilots.
Mountain said he expects the school to be back on course the first week of December.
"We are determined that we will not fail and we will honor with integrity our contracts," he said.

Well, here is what I know.
Air Safety was paying $40K a year salary, then it dropped to hourly. $20 an hour, and then the pay was cut to $14 an hour on average (30% pay cut) and then all the instructors got checks that were for minimum wage without notice.
