Arpey AA's CEO recently travelled to SJU on business.

Not a big deal right there's a few nonstop AA flights a day from DFW to SJU.

Apey was "...feeling out prospects for further employee concessions and announce dramatic reductions in SJU flight operations..."

This is wrong on so many levels...

Cheers

Why is that?

Flying on an airliner sucks. Most CEOs of billion dollar businesses DO NOT step on airliners.

Yeah but he is the airline CEO.
This is what American Airlines does.
American do have a first class.

They are hemorrhaging money
Fuel is at an all time high
And this guy flies to SJU in a bizjet to see how he might save some money...

Airline CEOs typically don't fly on bizjets...

Well, technically, it could be a trillion-dollar business, but that still wouldn't matter if it wasn't turning a profit.

That's not a ringing endorsement when word gets around that the CEO of the company won't use his own product ... that his First Class isn't nice-enough.

(Oh, and Arpey was one of the loudest voices in arguing that those pesky business jets were clogging-up the commercial airspace.)

Grinstein used to connect thru my station many times on his way to the Bahamas to go fishing. Off of DL on to a Continental 1900. He flew on a confirmed full F fare ticket....which I'm more than positive was charged to a DL credit card. Sucks it was still charged to the company but hey...at least he flew on the carrier he's running.

Juan Trippe didn't fly on PanAm. He had his own plane and pilots not on the SL to fly him around. That was in the 50s, I think.

One of his personal pilots was A.L. Ueltschi, who later would start Flight Safety International at the Marine Air Terminal in LaGuardia. Here's an excerpt from Mr Ueltschi's book,

"It may seem odd that the CEO of an airline that straddled the world would travel on a corporate airplane, but again, Pan Am was different. A passenger could fly Pan Am to the ends of the Earth but not to Chicago or Dallas or, most importantly Washington D.C. The airline was an international colossus; it was America's only international carrier. But that monopoly came at a price. Regulators denied it any domestic routes. So when Mr. Trippe traveled within the country, he needed his own plane to do so."

I actually had the privilege of flying Mr Ueltschi on a short hop years ago. Very nice guy and still travels in coach from A-B.

And this is a perfect example of how AMR's good employee's endorse, believe and work hard to keep the company going, but the CEO won't even use it. Corporate america at its best. And they want us(AA+AE) to taxi out on one engine to save AMR gas, but he flies on a bizjet to get somewhere??? hahaha...

Taxiing on one engine isn't normal procedures? I actually prefer it so I don't have to ride the brakes around everywhere. Plus on an hour taxi I'd rather have those 400lbs in the tanks and not out the tailpipe when I go fly.

Taxing on one engine is normal procedure because it saves gas. I rather taxi fast and get the hell out of dodge than see the sights on the taxi way(thats just me). I've had plenty of captains taxi on two. Its when you get a company man that irritates me. I hate flying with guys that talk about saving fuel for the mothership(AA) the whole trip. And then Aprey pulls this bizjet crap??? Instills real confidence in AA/AE management. I won't even start in on Bowler... LOL

Is it really hard to comprehend why it might be a bad idea for the CEO to ride AA to SJU when the main purpose is to slash staff and costs? The amount of drama some employees might create (right or wrong) is not worth it.

I grew up callling him Uncle Al, and he may travel in coach, but he also flies corporate too. My dad was one of the personal pilots at PAA with him.

The big man's 50th is coming up here pretty soon.

He got an early 240,000 share gift from AMR.

;)

You don't want to mess with those Puerto Ricans.
There was one retard that called in and asked if AE was reducing SJU flights because "Executive was beating AA at its own game."

Bowler (AE Pres) gave a quick WTFO? look and then embarrassed the guy.

Considering the irrepairable damage that was caused when he and his colleagues took bonuses while the rank and file took pay cuts, you'd think he'd have learned his lesson....

I actually see your point. I can see why he might not want to be around his own employees at this point since he's screwed them in the past...
