"Maintain VFR"

I was briefed a few months ago that this is the new criteria when issuing practice approached. Didn't always be that way. As well as the fact that we have to use IFR separation rules to certain airports in ATL Approach airspace, PDK, RYY, FTY, LZU, etc.

4−8−11. PRACTICE APPROACHES

5. All VFR aircraft shall be instructed to
maintain VFR on initial contact or as soon as possible
thereafter.

NOTE−
This advisory is intended to remind the pilot that even
though ATC is providing IFR-type instructions, the pilot is
responsible for compliance with the applicable parts of the
CFR governing VFR flight.

So why does ATC tell you to "maintain VFR on the go" when you ask for practice IFR approaches?

It's also because controllers are required to give a heading and altitude in climbout instructions. If you are VFR or are gonna be VFR after a practice approach, the .65 requires you to say "maintain VFR."
