***ATP PRICE INCREASE*** as of 7/1/08

Im gonna laugh when in a few months this industry bottoms out, and ATPs student enrollment drops with it. The ATP ACPP really only works when airlines are hiring, otherwise whats the point in fast paced...

You hit the nail on the head Rob...with the demise of Aloha, ATA, and Skybus the job market right now is flooded with pilots with hours of experience. Who knows what will become of Northwest and Delta....there could be more layoffs there too. I think ATP will continue to raise there rates as longs as there are people willing to pay more than they need to for flight training.:banghead:

alright whoever said ATP is trying to use this marketing technique is right and thank you.

That was me! They did the same thing to me over a year ago when they raised the price up a level. It was the "Get in before the price increase!" tactic. They almost suckered me in but I was able to resist. Be strong!

I am VERY glad I fell for it last June, now I am making more money than I ever had before in my life flying airplanes. So are you still working on your ratings?

That amount of money is just not worth it.

If you do spend that amount of cash then do your self a favor and stay off these forums cause you'll end up pissed off at the world.

Damn. This is funny. When I went through in '05 it was $34,995. Then it was a steal. You couldn't rent a twin for those hours at that price. In reality though, compare ATP to the other "Academies". They are still nearly half the price of DCA.

I wouldn't be going to ATP right now if I were looking to get in the industry. You would waste a LOT of money to end up at a bottom feeder Regional, if you'd end up there at all. Now is the time to go the FBO route and take your TIME. Get your ratings on the side while you work a full time job. The industry is going to continue to shake out and its only going to get worse. Throwing this load of debt on yourself right now is not a wise move, in my opinion.

Go to your FBO. ;)

I couldn't agree more!

"You just gotta do what you gotta do"

Is that the new ATP marketing slogan?
It's kind of catchy, I can see the commercial now. It's a era-piece set in the dustbowl in the depression straight from Steinbeck, tumbleweeds blowing around and a haggard farmer wearing dirty overalls, sweat on his brow and eyes squinting against the oppressive summer sun. He shakes his head softly, resigned and says in a slow Oklahoma-drawl, "You just gotta do what you gotta do."

The camera zooms out slowly and BAM! A d-jet makes a low, high-speed pass, streaking into a climb directly into the camera, turbine exhaust blowing the farmer's hat off and into the wind. When the D-jet covers the entire screen it fades to black and a the ATP logo appears:
Airline Career Pilot Program*

I do see the increase in price as a little shock as they just increased prices not too long ago. I am sitting here in Richmond waiting for my startdate(monday). I find it amusing all the naysayers bashing ATP, and saying its a waste of money, time, etc.

I agree its alot of money. And I also agree the program isnt for everybody. But to me its kind of rediculous to tell people their idiots for doing something that works for them. Last time I checked, nobody here is Dave Ramsey.

I am married, and my wife has her masters. She is pulling in close to 70k right now(sugar momma) as a travelling OT. I worked my arse off to help her finish school and let her do what she has dreamed of doing. Now its my turn, and thats being a pilot. I do not have any school debt. So its a wash to me when people critisize people for dropping 55k (soon to be 60k) for pilot ratings, when you could very easily spend the same amount going to college. My wife was very good at budgeting, but she still came out with 80k in school debt. So each path has its pro's and con's.

I could spend a year or two flippin burgers to try and save to fly. But why? Everything around me is telling me the costs to become a pilot are going to get higher. Higher fuel costs(talk to ur CFI, I bet these costs have him worried), More regulation(user fees pending in congress), and overall the worsening of the economy. Our dollar just doesnt buy what it used to. I forsee less people entering aviation, but to me and I believe every other commercial pilot out there as a good thing. Less supply, more demand, higher pay. The baby boomers are starting to retire, even with the new age 65 retirement rule, its only postponing the inevitable. Pilots are going to be in HIGH demand. Look it up, research it.

And I could very well follow a path that I make big bucks, but I wouldnt enjoy it. And as far as I know, in this "game" of life, there is no reset button. I would rather spend 40 years doing something I love and get paid crap to do it, than be miserable and try to replace that happiness by being materialistic.

Anyways, Im going to ATP. I am excited to do it. It works for me. Flying is what I love to do and what I have always dreamed of doing. IMO flying in the first row of any RJ is the best office in the world. The view is constantly changing, challenging, and fun. Anyways, I felt to unleash my opinion to combat all the people who will spend their days bashing ATP and programs like it because they will never realize that life is short, money in the end is just a piece of paper. And happy comes from the heart. So I would tell you to follow your heart, and live a happy life in whatever you do.

I had a deposit of go to ATP in March but in the end decided not to go. And for me that has been the best decision. But it's not to say that going there isn't the best decision for you. I agree that you have to pursue the things you love and at times that might take some sacrifice. But I would be pretty weary to making this jump if you are not FULLY informed on what you are getting hyourself into. I noticed that this is one of your first post here. I hope you can read everything you can on here as I did to make your final decision. In the end the financial sacrifice was not worth the time I would save by going there. I lost $2,000 to make that decison. I don't have personal experience in the airline industry yet but I know plenty of people who do. I think we can expect some turbulant times ahead. Having a combined debt of 130k might be something that could be hard to over come. I'm not a nay sayer of ATP. I was going there and everything I knew at the time was telling me that it was the best decision. But I think the tunnel vision of wanting to be a airline pilot NOW clouded my judgement. I'm working on my ratings now locally and it has moved fast enough. Just a thought...

I haven't been here in quite a while, but I'll throw in two shiny copper discs.

First, ATP is a business. That is clear, and should not be forgotten.
Second, nobody knows what the future will bring for people breaking into the industry.

There are complex variables to consider, and as future "risk assessors," you all want to make the bestest decision firstest. You CAN'T! You can only do what is good for only you. Some of the posts on this topic show a lack of understanding of the airline biz (as pilots, never accept "fun" in exchange for "low pay" over a full career), some of them have some very specious "facts" (regarding a 250 hour guy shooting an approach exceptionally well: Put him on 10 mile final at 210 kts to a vis, no papi/vasi/GS), but most of all, you all are considering where your career of choice is taking you and how you spend your money now will affect you later.

That is clearly the most important factor. Do what is best for YOU. And when you decide what that is, never look back.

It IS, by the way, an incredible job! As I'm finishing up the move to the left seat in the next few days, I still can't believe how rewarding the past 4 years (and about 3700 hours) in 121 have been.
