Is there a flying job that DOESN'T suck?

Of course there is. I'd say there's not a single flying job that sucks. It seems that 95% of the time someone posts something to "Jobs Available" there is a stream of "stay away from this place" posts to follow? Don't know where I'm going with this, but it gets pretty depressing. What finally set me off is the new posting for a job at Pacific Wings, flying as a FO in Hawaii. Come on. It can't be that bad to fly around HI for a bit in a Caravan. Maybe it can, I don't know, but every job has it's positives and negatives. You make what you can out of it right? Take a look at the "Jobs Avail" section. The first 10 listings have a "stay away" reply. Maybe they're legit, but that's a whole lotta negative.

Yes, there are plenty of jobs flying good equipment, making good money, for a company that treats you like a human being.

However, since they don't suck, they aren't desperate for warm bodies to put in a cockpit. Therefore you don't read about them on the "Jobs Available" section.

PS, an FO in a Caravan is really just ballast. And the job is in New Mexico, not Hawaii.

They post as an opening in HI and ABQ. At any rate, yea, I can see how the good gigs wouldn't make it as far as a posting on an online forum. Unfortunate.

Hence the importance of networking!

For Pacwings it really can be "that bad." There is a reason almost no one stays past 4 or 5 months and it isn't because its a dream job or they've gotten enough time to move onto bigger and better things.

:yeahthat:. I happen to have one of those jobs. The last 6 people to be hired into our department (pilots or otherwise) were the result of networking, therefore no need to advertise the positions.

Yes.

I don't like to use the word "love" with inanimate objects or non-humans, but the ER is pretty darned close to pure nirvana.

There are plenty of horrible places to work in this industry. When you factor in the cost of your training, and the fact that you are risking your life by relying on other people in the company (mx, dispatch, etc...) it is good to blow the whistle on bad places. There is a lot of naive fresh blood out there that get taken advantage of.

The best jobs seem to be the ones that are not advertised, and are usually obtained via connections and networking.

Just the remember, the grass isn't always greener, the color is just different. Find something you like and stick it out, don't jump around (I'm speaking from experience) hold out for the best offer. Time in the logbook isn't everything, quality of life is everything, you'll find something you like, just take your time.

I didn't see an ad for the job I currently have. I found out about the job from someone who worked for the company, submitted a cover letter and resume, and here I am nearly two years later still enjoying my job.

I never would have thought about applying for the job I now have if I didn't know someone who worked for the company.

That's networking, and everyone I know around here with a corporate flight job got theirs the same way.

...but flying the whale is pretty darn fun...plus it affords long stretches of family time when I'm home!!! As an added benefit, I have plenty of time to visit JC when I'm on the road. :)

When it comes down to it, people that have a negative opinion on a place are far more likely to talk about it. I am constantly amazed at how small the aviation world is, so word will travel fast. The good companies are out there, but they aren't going to broadcast when they need people since they generally don't need to.
