Princeton Airport, Princeton NJ

Princeton has some instructors that want to go out of their way to help you, which really means them making flight hours and a paycheck....but their airplanes are crappy, and staff who handles scheduling and other airport stuff I think are retarded.

My suggestion. If you have tons of money and nothing to do with it, use Solberg Aviation. they have nice airplanes, with a small airport setting and great staff. although its a part 61 program you wont get any loans for this type of school.

If you are lacking the money, use Century Air. They are certified by Sallie May, and a very profesional school. Career orientated fight school, and worht the time and money. You will be around profesional pilots, and fly in busy class D airport (Tower).

Mercer county college has an OK flight degree that you can transfer to some four year schools, but its all the way in Trenton, but that place can be slow, or fast depending on you as the student, how many instructors they have, and if their planes actualy work.

MY suggestion, is stay away from Princeton, look into Mercer College, and Century Air, Solberg is better the Princeton and alot closer to woodbridge.

Thanks alot!:), I went on the Solberg website and it said that the city was trying to take the feild away soo I don't want any uncertainty about my flight training location. Where do you do your flight training btw? Century Air looks vey good but I do not drive alone yett (16 years old, 17 july) soo is there any way I could take Mass Transit there?

if you can get to Penn Station, you can take the 11 to Willowbrook mall and you can ask them if they can pick you up there on the day of your lessons. I think they pickup some students at a dunkin donuts that is by there. That is the best that I can do for you. Or you can just call them up, the dispatchers tehre are real nice people!

Thanks!:), what do you mean by dispatchers? o btw I remember you said there was a member on here that instructs there right?

dispatchers is the fancy name they use for the guys/gals that work the front desk.

and yeah, there is a member on here that is an instructor there. happens to be my instructor by coincidence. nice guy. I just came back from my first x-country with him. I don't want to bring his name up, don't know if he wants me to, but if you look at some of my old posts you'll notice who he is. He just might chime in, i'll forward this to him.

I'm surprised nobody has mentioned Trenton-Mercer Airport (TTN). Its not far from Princeton at all and they have a few options for Flight Training. There's the Mercer College program, but you can get your ratings without being enrolled in the College.

Then there is also Royal Karina Air service in the Ronson building. They've probably got the best airplanes in the area. Clean, excellent maintenance etc. I personally don't care for the guy that runs it, but they had a really good instructor there and if you get with him, you'll be okay. Prices may be a touch on the high side, but its solid equipment. They even have backup Attitude Instruments in their C-172's.

There's always ATP and the 10 month program at TTN too for your Multi and beyond. Pretty $$$$$$ nowadays.

I actually fly out of TTN with Royal Karina and would recommend it if you had a way of getting to the airport. I am not sure, I will check next time I am over there, but NJ transit might have a bus that runs to the airport.

Like Airdale said, their equipment is very well maintained. You can certainly find newer equipment for cheaper but their instructors make up for any difference in price.

I am not sure why Airdale does not care for Bob, the owner, but he has never been anything but professional with me. Their other instructor, Bill, who I mainly fly with, is great. He, like Bob, is a lifetime CFI and is fully rated all the way up through MEII, although they no longer have a multi engine aircraft. He has flown numerous types of aircraft in all types of situations and is very good at passing that knowledge gained on to his students. In the end I may spend a few more dollars than others but my personal preference is to learn from an experienced pilot, not a wet behind the ears CFI.

My only issue is the fact that I can not fly as often as I would like. It is a very small operation, only open Thursday-Sunday. On Thurs and Fri they only the owner is there and Bill is only available on the weekends. If your goal is to get done as quickly as possible, you will not be happy there.

Thanks!:), but as of now, I am seriously looking into starting at Century Air ASAP. I called them and the said that I have to meet/talk to the Owner/President as a prerequsite.

Yeah, they like to make sure the people they put in their aircraft are responsible and are not going to be reckless.

if you meet with Rich, he may come off a little weird, but honestly, he wants nothing but the best for his students. he has accomplished a lot and passes it on all the time. Barry, the chief instructor, if you meet with him like I did, is an amazing guy also! you won't regret it for a minute.

We'll definitely fly together soon enough my man. My instructor said he would contact you. I'll try to remind him next time I talk to him.

edit: tried IMing you on AIM just now, but no joy.

YAH I have been PMing him, and sorry about AIM haha, I have not been on in a day or two, but I will deff add yuo to my buddy list.:) How was your first time there? Like visit wise? Did they give you a tour of everything?

To get to Caldwell, you could take the train into Penn Station, walk up 8th avenue to the Port Authority Bus Terminal, take Lakeland Route 46 bus past Willowbrook Mall to Passaic Avenue and walk the 1 1/2 miles to Caldwell. I did it for 4 years working on my Private through Commercial and Instrument. Or someone could pick you up if the walking conditions are less than ideal (2 feet of snow, etc) at the gas station/Dunkin Donuts (a blessing on hot days).

Stay away from Air Fleet, they will screw up your Sallie Mae loans. The guy who owns Century seems okay, he's a DPE and retired American Captain from what I remember.

I've been to Princeton when I had my car, and I wasn't impressed by their fleet. However, the lady, Naomi seemed nice. I only met her once though.

Good luck on your training!

Thank's!:), Do you still train there?

My first time there, I went with my mom. It was probably the best of all the schools I spoke with. I met with barry, the cheif flight instructor. He told it to me like it is, much like I hear on here everyday. There isn't really much to tour, though it is the nicest flight school I have seen by far.
