I have noticed that for quite some time Hillsboro Aviation has been advertising for CFI positions on their website. Does anybody know if they are still hiring? Pay? Lots of flying? Recommended? Thanks!

So far as I know they're still hiring. The pay information I was quoted in January:

$16-25/hour, depending upon experience and whether you qualify for bonus (bill more than 55 hours in a two week period and you get an extra buck per hour, more than 65 for two bucks. You also have to have 70% utilization of your scheduled aircraft time).

At 750 Dual-Given you'd be looking at $17.50/hour + bonus + $3/hour for 141 progress checks and CFI-Initial training.

No benefits.

While there is no sales tax in Oregon, Portland is still a high cost-of-living place.

HAI is still hiring. They are having trouble finding enough qualified CFIs. They are looking for longer term CFIs. There are a ton of students in that area, so as a CFI you would be VERY busy. Many fly 8 hours a day during the summer...

If you send in your application I think you will hear back from them pretty quickly.

I would stay far away from HAI (hillsboro aviation incorporated). You will be teaching almost all foreign students. You will have to get used to being #6 or #7 in the pattern pretty regularly and being one of the only ones who speaks english fluently. I have friends who work there and their maintence is nothing to write home about. Definately not worth the price if you are a renter. Instructors are forced to attend weekly meeting on how to find new ways to bill out for more time on customers. HAI has a pretty poor reputation among local examiners and is becoming more of a pilot mill than anything else. You will build time quickly but you will pay the price, in regards to the horrible pay, low quality of life, and management breathing down your back.

I've heard good and bad things about HAI. I currently have a friend and former CFI co-worker who works there, and he says you can definitely rack up the time and make a few bucks while you're at it. There are opportunities for multi-time as well. I haven't heard anything bad about their maintenance.

However, I also know that there are a lot of foreign students there (they have contracts with some Chinese airline I believe), and they push their instructors very hard. I heard a rumor from a former employee there that they kind of have a don't ask/don't tell policy about the instructors actually sticking to their 8-hour maximums.

Yeah, they are definatly pretty hard working instructors. They somehow manage to get exactly 8 hours per day...

I have to say that the MX at HAI is pretty good. The hangers are clean and organized. I've never had an issue with an airplane there.
