Nonrev to Hawaii...doable?

we're thinking of getting married in Hawaii in July. Using Delta nonrev does anyone know if July trips to Hawaii are doable or risky at best? also, any reviews of the islands or advice would help. thanks all
 
Delta out to Hawaii is typically LOADED with non-revs all year around....any one flight could be listing 20-40+ non-revs. if they all get on or not, i have no idea. I've been watching to try and get an idea myself but decided to just forgetaboutit.

If you *have* to be there, it'd be best to just buy a ticket.
 
70's, 80's, early 90's easy. Now, not so much. I have been told that you need to schedule 2 days each way, and that is with 10+ seniority on your airline (that was for UAL). Sometimes you will luck out, also HNL is now easier then going to HOG (Maui). Years ago, it was those flights that were always empty.

My parents non-reved to their honeymoon in hawaii in '83.

The first night of their honeymoon was spent in Raliegh, NC for the sole fact that it wasn't New York. The second night was spent in Los Angeles. They finally made it on day three. This was in September.

I made it out and back just fine in May a few years ago EWR-HNL-EWR both ways in First.
 
It seems to be Hawaii is one of those places where if you have a few days off and the flights look empty you go. But as far as planning in advance and needing to be there specific days, yeah, better buy a ticket.

I've been trying to non-rev to Kona since November and it's been tough.
 
My wife and I want to non-rev to Hawaii on US/HP, but everything is always oversold....plus I try and spend as little time in our ETOPS 757's as possible, or ensure my tetanus shot is up to date.

Don't bother with Aloha....pax operations have ceased as of either today or yesterday.
 
I haven't tried it yet myself but alot of the guys at my station have had great success non-reving to Hawaii on AS. SEA usually has 3-5 open seats and ANC has about 10 daily. I looked up tomorrow's loads and SEA has 5 open seats with 2 non-revs trying to get on and ANC has 25 open seats plus 1 in First Class with 15 non-revs trying to get on.
 
Id just buy some back ID90s on Hawaiian and Northwest and best case you can just return them. When I went to Kona last summer on NWA there were somthing like 15 non revs and we all got on. I think NWA is $135 RT from the mainland to Hawaii, and Hawaiian is in the same ballpark. Overall not to bad as a back up plan.
 
if its a gotta go type thing, Does delta have any pos. space discounts? At NW i know they have a 20% discount on the lowest published fare, with a guaranteed seat. Or last resort, priceline. I never used it for flights, but I have had a lot of luck with hotels. good luck and congrats.

That must have been a long flight! 10 hours or so??
 
I can't wait to be able to nonrev. How exactly does it work, does each carrier have a working agreement with other specific carriers or is it just an unspoken rule that all airline personnel can nonrev on any airline with available seating? How is a nonrev different than a jumpseat? Other than the fact that a jumpseat can be located in the cockpit from what I understand.
 
Most carriers have agreements to non-rev with everyone else. Some you pay for and others you don't. I don't know if it works the same on the in-flight side of the house but at our station we also have special station agreements with other airlines. So here in BOI I can fly for free on airlines that guys that work in GEG have to pay for becuase of our in house station agreements.

Being an employee typically You, your kids, wife and parents can fly free on YOUR airline an unlimited amount of times( at least at Alaska). Then you have guest passes which you can give out to anyone so they can have a cheat seat on your airline or bring them with you for free. Then after an amount of time decided by other airlines which your employer has partnership with you can buy ID90’s or 95’s or whatever the agreement states which are 10% or 5% of a full fare ticket. Jump seating is free and if you are cass you can ride in the jumpseat if the cabin is full.
 
UPS and Fedex both fly to Hawaii several times daily (except sunday). You can usually pre-book your seat. Of course, this doesn't help if you want to bring someone with you.
 
My in laws have used buddy passes on DL the last two years in Feb/March from BOS-HNL. They only missed one flight in two years. Lucky.

My wife and I went to Maui for our honeymoon and just ended up getting a delta vacations deal so we didnt have to worry about non reving. Your memory of your honeymoon could be a sour one if you spend a few days at the airport trying to get there and back. Best of luck.
 
thanx for all the info and ideas. we're still trying to figure it all out, i'd just hate to spend the $1500 for RT for us and find i could have nonreved for nothing. then again we'd be even more upset if we got stuck at the airport for a couple days.

couple other options:

1.) i've noticed that there are four daily flights to Hawaii from LAX on Delta. LAX-OGG, LAX-HNL, LAX-KOA, LAX-LIH. loads don't actually look that bad from what i've seen. but then again i've only been looking for a couple days, so i'll take Kristie's word that there are lots of nonrevers. if we could catch one of those, then take the superferry from whatever island we end up at to the one we have a room, or just take take an inter-island flight it might work out. got a cousin in LA so we could try and get there and then let the games begin.

2.) might try and see how hard it is to nonrev to LAS from BUF. LAS to HNL or OGG is only like 400/each RT so thats not so bad. give ourselves a buffer, nonrev to LAS a couple days before, if we make it the first day we get a room and gamble for a night or two, then positive space from LAS-Hawaii and vice-versa.

3.) ignore the fact we don't make much money, bite the bullet and buy tickets from buf-ogg. walk on beach, drink beach type drinks, get married, do that which married people do, rinse-repeat for a week or so.
 
There used to be a nonstop CVG-HNL, but when the cut back in Jan, it went away. We really never had a problem getting to Hawaii from either ATL, SLC, or LAX. There may be 40-50 nonrevs listed but most are S-4 buddy pass riders. You might look into booking from SAN,SFO, or LAX on Hawaiian or DL from LAX or SLC, and just nonrev to get out to the departure point. Might save you some money. I flew Hawaiian from SAN to HNL for $375/per. It was during peak summer travel so nonrev was a no go on Delta.
 
thanx i'll check it out. looked like hawaiian from SAN was 400 each way per person. so far the cheapest i've seen is on ATA out of LAS for 400/pp RT. i'll keep on looking, anyone find anything else let me know. thanks everybody!
