ok so someone who has been around a while fill me in on whatever this SAMA thing is coming up?

i gather its some sort of job fair?

is this worth even attending if you arent in CFII or the CRJ class (ie - graduating very very soon)??

and i dont mean in the sense of "yes networking is always important" but more of in the sense "is this going to really serve me some concrete good and be worth my time"?

im hoping ill have 325 done by then, should i go to this? if so, what can i expect and what should i bring?

its kinda frustrating not having any clue whatsoever as to what this thing even is........ sometimes the dissemination of information around the aviation department seems very hit and miss...

im also curious whats up with ASA... their website says if you have a jet course, no minimums needed for an interview.

sounds fun.... and their pay scale is pretty good too it appears..... and i could live in the south ;-)

"Not hiring. Not hiring at least through April.

Minimums: 500TT/50ME or Comm'l for those with advanced jet training, which would include experience in/with:
Level C/D Jet Simulator
Level 5/6 jet FTD
FMS Training
Glass cockpit
Crew resource management (CRM) training
Accelerated jet ground school.

New-hire pay $300/week until beginning IOE. During IOE it is Year 1 "

Not sure on that event, I remember when I was there, it was a conference, and had many speakers in all parts of the aviation industry, I was a speaker host and had a wonderful opportunity to host an AA captain. We had a red bull pilot, Al haynes speak, a rep from Emierates etc.... There were also booths outside room 114? (the room where avit 100 and avit meteorology is held) some CFI's showed up in a suit and had a resume at hand.

I say do not apply until at least your a CFI, I knew someone who applied with his 325 done got an on campus interview, but diddnt get on. However what Mr.X also did was send his apps elsewhere on his own direct to XYZ airline and got an interview. UND and many other collegeiate aviation schools DO recieve preferential hiring. You should email the club officers directly for questions if you want I still have them in contact via FB.

Wow, you attitude is awesome! Make sure to bring it with you to the conference & career fair and I'm sure they'll give you a job right away. :sarcasm:

I was in SAMA for 4 years while at UND. Since you have no clue what's going on, I'll give you a quick rundown. During the conference they will being in gust speakers, most of them are UND Alumni. It is a way to see how they got from UND to where they are now, while providing some good tips and pointers how to get into this indutry.

As for the career fair. Well, it's a Career Fair. You should dress nice and bring copies of resumes and/or some business cards. Even if you are not looking for a job right now, it is still good to meet people from the industry, see what the companies have to offer, and if you still don't care, just take a walk through and grab some free stuff.

It is definitely worthwhile! I've made a ton of contacts while doing this for 4 years.

I guess it is official now! ASA has stopped hiring. Maybe Screaming Emu knows more...

i fail to see how my (typically critical) attitude was in any way conveyed in my post.

i was asking for information about the SAMA thing because the info had not yet filtered down to me, or i have not been in the right place at the right time to get the scoop.... and now i know.

hmm, thats a shame about ASA, they actually were sounding somewhat appealing to me....

The SAMA conference has to be the funniest thing ever. A couple days of every DB kissing some other DB's A$$ especially if it is at the Horizon booth. I remember sitting in class last year and finding out who got hired and by which company with 300 hours. The list of regionals you won't let your family fly on will grow at the SAMA conference.

The SAMA conference and career fair is held each year in Clifford hall. It is a big event in April that is pretty hard to miss each year. Most instructors in the aviation department will not lecture during the event and instead send students to the conference.

Here is some general information for this year's conference and career fair: 2008 SAMA Conference & Career Fair The conference will be held over two days: April 17 & 18. The career fair is only on April 18. We will know more when the date approaches.

If you want to know how it went last year, here are some details: 2007 SAMA Career Fair

I'd say overall the career fair in particular is primarily for graduating seniors looking for jobs. However, there will be companies taking applications and even interviewing for internship positions. If you are looking for an internship, this may interest you. It is also a great way to talk to companies and ask questions about them. You might also get some free stuff :D

Looking for a job while in 325, I'd say that is probably too early unless you are an Aviation Management major graduating soon. Although you may have heard stories of students last year that got jobs lined up for after graduation a year out, hiring seems to be slowing down and minimums are being expected to go back up. Airlines coming to the career fair will most likely be looking at current CFI's and those who have completed 480.

Do definitely check it out, however. You may discover other options not known to you.

ASA has been confusing lately. I'm not exactly sure of their status. Student Services posted this earlier in the week: http://studentservices.aero.und.edu/f4_Jobs and Scholarships/view_job.php?JobID=755

It says they will be interviewing, but now with the CRJ course minimums are at least 400TT, 50ME.

Well the SAMA conference is a good place to get info and to get free stuff. If you are a CFI and/or your have completed 480 then get your resume and cover letter polished up and try your best shot with the companies you want to go too. As for ASA its kinda a jungled mess. Is ASA done for a long time as far as hiring....prolly not. They are still hiring but they are not givin out class dates. They will put you in a hiring pool and will call your number when they have a spot for you. The deal is the delta is cutting domestic flying and the regionals are doing alot of it. So if delta wants less flying then why hire more pilots for aircraft that may not be flying as much... This could be a temporary thing or it could be a longer thing no one knows. Still apply to ASA becasue if you like the company then good for you and things will work out for ya. If you are just applying to ASA because you fit the hiring minimums and think that a 200 or 700 is cool (SJS) then maybe throw your stuff in at other places. Good Luck at SAMA I always had fun in the past listening to the cool speakers.
