Sleep bank

I'm very much a night owl.

Unfortunately, I work 1st shift (7am-3:30) and I need 8 hrs of sleep, and probably bout' 10 on the weekends. Because I'm making up for lost time/sleep, and because, I can.

But 8 hrs is the norm!

Due to being a night owl, and working the morning shift I would need to be in bed by 9 or 10pm.

Which is by far is too early for me, as I'm typically just catching my second wind.

So, normally I try to take a nap when I get home for 2-3 hours, and awake at 8-9pm. I typically retire for the night on average between 11-1am.

And awake at 6am.

My question to you is. Does my typical 5-6 hours of sleep at night plus my earlier 2-3 hour nap equal my bodies required 8 hrs. of sleep.

Or does my body not combine the total, and count each sleep event seperately.

I know everybodies body is different, and short of doing an exhaustive study on me, averages are cool with me!
