The way it still should be.

Maybe I'm offbase and maybe I'm naive, but I'm not sure why people like to behave like this. Maybe it's because people don't like taking directions or are just generally angrier these days but I definitely know that the FAs and pilots were all professional and competent and damned patient with everyone. Women, men, old, and young. All hard-working and good people.

It was like riding a greyhound bus and it made me feel a little discouraged about the path I'm headed down...

I think airports/airplanes everybody hates it now. You got more security, have to be there earlier, lots of delayed flights, not that good of customer service, they overbook all the time, and then people that work flight attendants/ticket agents are also unhappy. So you have unhappy customers & unhappy workers on top of stress = anger. Traveling today is the same as going to the dentist, people don't like it.

I am not blaming flight attendents/ticket agents because I don't know how you deal with angry people all day. The lost baggage office that must be hell on earth, you couldn't pay me enough to do that job.

Good points. However, it's like a vicious cycle. If the passengers are pissy, it can make the gate agents/FA's pissy and vice versa. That's human nature. I've always found that if you project a positive, friendly attitude MOST people will respond in kind. Sure, there are the a-holes who are miserable SOB's and NOTHING's going to change that. Remember, some pax act that way for many different reasons. They could be afraid to fly, they could be flying somewhere to see a dying friend/relative, they could be traveling on some serious company business, they could be having marital/family problems. The best way to deal with "bad attitudes" is to not think it's necessaraily directed at you. This holds true in any profession, IMHO. :)

I was a consumer of quite a few international tickets back when I lived in Japan. I think I flew maybe 2 or 3 times a year back and forth to the states, and I definitely did notice that the Asian airlines I flew on ALWAYS had young, attractive female flight attendants...

But it didn't change my decision-making process about which flight to book. I looked at expedia, travelocity, and priceline, and went with the cheapest flight that I could find that got me to the airport that I wanted to get to on the day (and preferably at the TIME) that I wanted to get there. PERIOD, DOT.

As I recall, there have been a few (albeit very small) airlines that have tried the "good-looking chicks" business model, but I don't recall any of them doing very well. How well is Hooter's air doing? They did almost EXACTLY what was posted above by Toonces, and went out of business in about 3-ish years.

Mostly, I think the difference between the "special-ness" of air travel in most foreign countries and here in the States is that in most foreign countries only the rich can afford air travel. Especially as the nation in question gets poorer. Hence, air travel abroad has that 'luxury' feel, because in that nation it IS a luxury.

Yipee us! In the USA even the poor can afford luxury travel. USA! USA!

Oh, someone earlier asked what 'WASP' was. It stands for "White, Anglo-saxon, protestant." Essentially, it means the "priveledged" class, but it dates back to probably the 50's or earlier. The more modern term is probably "white Christian male", since discrimination against southern Europeans, Irish, Germans, and Eastern Europeans is probably not really a prevalent phenomenon anymore (although it certainly was at the turn of the last century).

Ok then. I think this thread has drifted off topic a little too far. I think we were originally talking about airline travels former greatness in the U.S, and how we could recapture that. I think in order to be perceived as spectacular, one must look and be the part.
1.Airplanes must be clean.
2.Baggage must get from point A to B in one piece and on time.
3.There should be adequate staff at ticket counters and gates to provide quality customer service.
4. Food should be served on all flights, time permitting.
5. Flight crews must look and be professional.
6. Cabin crews must provide excellent customer service. They are the face of the company. If it was your company, what face would you want it to look like?

This is my vision for returning the class and glory days to airline travel. Since pilots are a dime a dozen, why not have handsome pilots versus dumpy looking ones? Why not pay young attractive and qualified FA's the money they need and deserve to attract and keep them?

You don't have to like my ideas, but I stand behind them 100%. If you had your choice of flying an airline I was running or any other U.S airline today, which would you choose.

I think it's cute how your posts consistently assume pilots are men and flight attendants are women.

I flew with a female captain thru a city that will remain unnamed and the agent was reluctant to give either one of us the paperwork! :)

I like to remember that situation like Dr. King smiling down a little ray of sunlight...

Where in that particular post did I refer to any gender? It's too bad some of you feel this is a man vs. woman thing. I thought it was supposed to be about the good old days when air travel was actually glamorous.

While we are on the whole gender note... It's funny how young attractive women use their sexuality as the ultimate weapon to get everything they want. It all seems o.k to them until they hit 30 something and gravity and time take their toll. Then we get the same women who used their sexuality in their prime to get the things they wanted, demand that looks shouldn't be taken into consideration.

My best friend told me how he was at the bank the other day and some airhead teller kept prompting him to open some account. She was being all flirtatious and even said in a suggestive manner that "the more accounts you have the better service you get" wink wink. So she kept flirting and bugging him and finally she asked "what will it take to get you to open an account today"? His response was give me a "Lewinski", although he phrased it differently. Of course she seemed offended. I thought she had it coming though. I give him props for doing that. A lesser man would have caved and gave her what she wanted. She would have got her commission and probably laughed to her friends how she suckered another fat old man.

Moral of the story. Women use sex to their advantage until they can't pull it off anymore. Then they expect everyone to feel sorry for them. That doesn't fly with me. The only ones I feel bad for are the ugly chicks who could never pull off the whole cutesy act.

Is it just me or does anybody else find this very sad, but amusing nonetheless?! If you don't mind me asking, how old are you, Toonces?

Toonces, Toonces. Where to start with you, son? This is too easy...

Amazing. You outed yourself as sexist and ageist in one sentence. What's the matter, kid? Not having much luck with the ladies? Perhaps you should invesigate one of your local Cougars. They could probably teach you a thing or two about sex. Women are like fine wine, they get better with age. You seem to be stuck on the jailbait mode. Too much MTV, kiddo.

Of course, a Cougar would want you to satisfy her, so it probably wouldn't work.

Then we get the same women who used their sexuality in their prime to get the things they wanted, demand that looks shouldn't be taken into consideration.

I hate to break it to you, Tooney, but often its women who are NOT what you'd consider "model" quality who make the best lovers. And, on top of that, its been my experience that the MORE intelligent a woman is, the better lover she is. You probably haven't experienced that yet, since you're posts here indicate you prefer denigrating women to actually exploring their minds and hearts.

You're missing out, buddy.

Ya think? And, I'll bet if he sees her in the local bar tonight with a herd of her friends, they'll get a detailed brief on the fact that he's a sexist pig.

I thought she had it coming though. I give him props for doing that.

Birds of a feather flock together, I guess. Have you ever considered the pleasure of just "bantering" with an attractive woman WITHOUT expecting a sexual outcome? Probably not. Of course, you might be amazed how a little flirtaous banter might actually lead you to an "experience".

A lesser man would have caved and gave her what she wanted. She would have got her commission and probably laughed to her friends how she suckered another fat old man.

Or maybe he might have just enjoyed talking to the girl and gone about his business without a crass proposition. And they both might have enjoyed the encounter. Of course, you "superior men" don't understand that.

Moral of the story. Women use sex to their advantage until they can't pull it off anymore. Then they expect everyone to feel sorry for them. That doesn't fly with me. The only ones I feel bad for are the ugly chicks who could never pull off the whole cutesy act.

Apparently your entire "morality" is looks based. You should probably reevaluate your value system. Because its obvious you aren't scoring with either the lookers or their less attractive sisters.

Oh well. There's always Miss October.

Hey, Captain, you may have been a little hard on Toonces. I'm sure he's a stud of a man and can get any female he desires. He should consider posting his picture here for all to see. ;)

:laff:

OMG, can't stop laughing........

OK, I've composed myself now.

You think women in their 30's are past their prime! Oh, my. Did you know that a woman actually reaches her sexual peak in her 30's? Whereas men reach there's in their late teens/early 20's.
