Starting my Instrument Rating training Sunday

I'm really looking forward to it! I've been studying hard, and it will be awesome to finally put the book work to use in the air! :nana2:

Just remember one thing... when flying instrument... if your not doing SOMETHING in the cockpit, then theres something your not doing... you should always be getting weather, knowing where you are, making sure radios are setup properly, make sure your heading is right, hell if its a longer IFR flight I even go over lost comms. and emergency situations in my head to keep them right up top. When you KNOW your coming up to the airport make sure you get the "6 T's " (turn, time, twist, throttle, talk, track) done, make sure you have a good guess at what approach you'll be shooting according to the winds at the airport and what approaches they have, also make sure (and its something i try to do with my students) is PLEEEEEASE review the dang approach BEFORE you even takeoff... I don't know how many students I have that for some odd reason don't do this and they get up there and I ask them "ok were in the approach corridor... how low (wht are mins.), how long (whats our 90 knot approach GROUND (not indicated) speed time), and which way (on the missed) .

Oh, also if you have to... something that helped me out was go buy some plastic sleeve covers for the approach plates and get an eraseable marker... DRAW OUT THE ENTRY TO THE HOLD, and make notes of WHY your doing that hold!!!!!!! It will help you visualize while your up there so your not going missed and trying to figure out what the heck to do.

Theres SOOO MUCH to know about insturment I would honestly go buy the Gleim FAA Instrument book. I work at The Pilot Shot (Pilotstore.com) and its one of the best books i've seen for instrument.

Check it out here: http://www.pilotstore.com/store/item.asp?ITEM_ID=1006&DEPARTMENT_ID=56

Enjoy it...it's the most enjoyable training I've done...(though that'll change as soon as this 121 class is complete)

Instrument flying is busy, but nearly as busy as the above post makes it seem. If you're prepared and ready for the flight, it's actually more relaxing than VFR flying..it makes it so much easier going into a busy airport.

Have fun!

Yep, I'm working the instrument test prep now as well. Martha and I are hot and heavy into the studying towards passing the exam.

Great! I just passed the written on thursday(2 days prep with King Schools). Can't wait to get in the air..

Ok, HighFlyingIL,
I took your recommendation and bought the book (plus a view limiting device and a dual timer). I've been studying for the written test on my own and I've tried several books...I'm consistently scoring right around 80 percent now. I want to get to 90 percent before I take the test. I think I need to schedule some ground time with an instructor to break through some of the recurring confusion I seem to have. I am anxious to get on with it and start doing some of the training in the air.

By the way, I really enjoyed Rod Machado's new instrument book. He has a different approach and sometimes it helps understand concepts better than the stuff that looks like it was written by a government attorney.

Definitly buy the Gleim book, and the Gleim software. These tools will help you tremendously. What I did was read the gleim chapter to chapter, and then took the test over and over and over on the software. Memorization was a great tool to help past the test. All though you will memorize many questions, memorization is also learning. Good luck with your rating, and have fun in the clouds. :)

Can someone explain what software offers? Is it just practice tests? I've been going to Sportys.com and taking the written test there. Would there be a benefit to buying software?

the software that I used from Gleim has every question available to you that will be on the FAA exam. It also has tutorials, and the same maps and images that are used on the FAA. You can also set it up to where you can answer the questions and they will tell you if your question is wrong right away with a full explanation as to why.

does that help at all?

Flybob- I just did the King Course. Here is my story...... called lasergrade on Tuesday 9:00 AM and scheduled test for Thursday at 11:00. Had not even opened the book and have had absolutely no instrument instruction. Nothing like a little pressure to get you moving! Watched about half the DVD's on Tuesday. Didn't finish watching them until 8:45 on Wednesday night(Oh ... am I behind)Took practice tests until midnight. Got up at 5:00, took three practice tests and I was off. Finished test fairly quickly. Didn't score as well as I would have liked but hey, I didn't study as much as I should have!(I scored in the 80's so it wasn't that bad). Worked for me but your results may vary! JOE

Concur. I'm working my way through it now. . . looking for anything over 95% when I actually take the test. Should do so within three weeks.

In hind sight maybe I should have studied more but I got it done and mid 80's wasn't so bad....

Wow....I've been studying for months! Guess the old dog is a bit slow. Sounds like the Gleim software would be a good addition, however...so I'll get that too.

GL man! I passed my checkride oral almost two weeks ago and I keep having to postpone my freakin flight because of weather... one of these days i'll be able to get my rating :)
