CFI Binder

Well....After about 500 page protectors, two ink cartridges and more paper cuts than I care to remember, I have finally finished my CFI binder. I'm pretty sure I have everything covered, but I just cant to have the feeling that their could potentially be more, or something else I could add to simplify...

I know it would be an enormous amount of work and I doubt anyone has done it, but has anyone scanned their book onto the internet? If not, can anyone lead me to some good sites with maybe some lesson plans and additional sources? I'd just like to cross check my work with what other people are doing, and possibly add a couple more things if they are worth while.

thanks

Done? It'll never be done.

I thought mine was done. That was 2 binders ago. I'm up to 3. One for Private, Commercial and CFI (SE) stuff, one for instrument stuff and one for multi-engine stuff.

Amazing how much info is out there.

MIDLIFE...

That (Jim Price) is one of the others I was searchin' for in my reference stuff---must've deleted it somewhere down the road. Now I have it again...thanks.

Definately not done, but I feel that the information that I have thus far would be acceptable to bring for the checkride.......

Thanks for the resources...

I just went to AOPA for the first time in years...Hell of a place!

I try to have a good assortment of pertinent NTSB reports and advisory circulars too...fwiw.

There's a lot of information you can get straight from the FAA.

Good luck with the initial!

From Pac Man's list, I'd recommend jedi nein's pages and the general information available on theCFI.com. I'd also add
http://home.att.net/~jm.price/instructor.htm

A word of caution on those binders, though - examiners tend to be more interested in how you use them than what's in them.

Good luck.

I never made a binder as a CFI... what's it do? :p I have a grab-bag of documents and a computer full of internet shortcuts to important stuff. I guess it's an electronic "binder" in that regard.

So, basically, what's in it? I have started one with AC's and another with some other odds and ends, plus I have all the books.

I am not sure what else to put in myself.

Thanks,

David

I have a little bit of everything...A lot of the stuff I will prolly never really need, but I figure as an instructor, it's all fair game...Who knows what a student will ask you?

My binder consist of everything from lesson plans, and Advisory Circulars, to Intercept procedures....

And I am learning that it is what you know and not whats in your binder...If I were to go up to the fsdo and have to use my binder to respond to each answer, i'd look like a jerk. It feels very unnatural to even read out of the binder...I prefer to hear a question, picture myself in the airplane and respond from there....That said, the binder is still going to be an awesome resource.

Hey, I know alot of CFI's that supplement their binders with a book called "Everything Explained for the Professional Pilot." I use it both as a teaching aid and refresher for myself. It's written by Richie Lengel.

No I do not endorse this book, I just found it useful.

I just ordered a copy........heard it is quite good.

MikeOH58,

When are you taking your ride? I am supposed to be taking mine on Jan. 30th if the WX cooperates. I'm still going to try and do the oral even if I can't fly.

I'm glad you asked this question on here because it gave me some good ideas for thigns to add to my binder. :)

Good luck to you!

David

Goodluck man! I am sure you will kick some arse! As for me, I am hoping to schedule my ride sometime over the next 2 weeks...I feel I am just getting really comfortable with the oral portion and now its time to fly...I have no problem in the right seat, as i've done the transition long ago...Now its just gonna come down to seeing how long it takes to get all the maneuvers to commercial standards.

again, goodluck.

It's not WHAT's in the binder that counts.
It's how much of it you UNDERSTAND.

There were some guys in my CFI class last summer that had 2 or 3 binders and failed their orals on things as simple as airspace. You have to know what's in your binder as well as know where to look it up in sources other than your own binder.

I.E. FAR 91.175. You can tell a IRA/CFII student all about landing reqs. but many students want to know your not pulling this stuff out your ***.

Like everyone else said, you gotta want to teach is the bottom line...

The point of the binder is to collect in one place the reference material you need for the CFI checkride. It's also useful when teaching students, but that's mostly a secondary use.

I'm not sure any examiner actually LOOKS in the binder, but when they're peppering you with questions the ability to use it to find the answers is a plus. I think people (me included) spend too much time on their CFI binder - but I doubt I'm going to able to convince anybody of that :-)
