 Alright....don't say I didn't warn you. I have my big group of friends here which makes time go by well, but boy do I miss NYC. I thought, "it's only four years, I'll be ok," and truthfully I AM ok, but could definitely be a LOT better.
Anyway...for those who like going out and trying new things, GFK is not for you. There is only so much you can do in this town. It becomes monotonous after the second week.

I'll quit from this thread before it goes to page 20.

Man.....in a few years, I'd like to get an S2000!

All Joshing around aside, I still recommend visiting the place before coming here. I've gotten along with very little headache and I actually don't mind being here at all in the summer. Great friends helps out a LONG way.

I honestly dont like NYC the people are weird no offence  but anyways the purpose I am traveling across half of America is for a good flight school where after graduating I can get a good job as pilot and University of North Dakota can offer me that.

Not to burst your balloon or bubble, or however the saying goes, but UND isn't the ONLY place you can get your education and ratings. Seems like you haven't considered all of your options. By all means, come! This is a great school. I just have a firm belief that people shouldn't be making uninformed choices. That's all...just watching out for you!

ok what are my choices

MDSU
Framingdale
Crookston
North Dakota
OSU

Not talking about expensive schools like
Embry Riddle
New Hampshire

I got accepeted to Crookston is it any better then North Dakota? lol

I applied to UND don't run my experience of looking forward coming to Grand Forks from Manhattan :buck:

You know the little road trip upstate, the vacation in Vermont, or one down to the south. You know how beautiful suburbia seemed to ya, well Grand Forks is nothing like that. You have made your decision and as someone from NYC also, I welcome you. If you need any help while you are new here, I will be glad to show you around.

I would also consider ANY regular school with an airport close by with a good FBO with a good base of EXPERIANCED instructors.

UND is almost all new hires right now, a majority of which are part-timers like myself. Some restructuring would have to be done to change this. Not saying this is completely bad, but coming from an instructor with only a semester of part-time instructor experiance, I feel I could do much better with a comple years of instructing experiance and being full-time without my own classes taking time away. I'm not the only one that feels this way either. Anyone that doesn't have a huge ego would probably say the same thing.

I like UND's structure and fairly knowledgeable ground school instructors.(depending on who you get) So this can pretty easily substitute for an inexperienced instructor. I also liked the fairly new and well maintained fleet of airplanes. A lot of places to go after school have fairly new equipment. So getting that experience early on can be a benefit, but you could also potentially receive the same thing from an FBO with similar fleet.

I did pretty much the same thing you did, looked at a couple schools and decided on UND. Some reasons were what I listed above, others were things like me wanting to get away from my hometown and experience living in a different on my own. Do I regret it? Not at all. I do however regret that I didn't look around at other places with an open mind however.

Sorry for the rambling, but I just wanted to throw a few things out there that you should consider before making the final decision. 4 years may seem short, and will probably seem short after you graduate, but while your in school it just seems to drag out. Come and visit and see if it's somewhere you want to spend 4 years of your life.

:yeahthat:

But really in general people need to stop being so negative. Yeah its cold as hell...yes it's small and their is almost nothing exciting to do. It is a great school with a great program and I've learned a lot here already. You meet lots of cool new people and it's just a interesting and fun experience. You sit here bored to death on some days but really it isn't that bad and it does pass fast. I know that in 6-7 or more years you (at least I) will look back on it as a good experience. If you come with an open mind and with a goal in mind you will get through it fine. Some days its terrible, but there are good times as well. As stupid as it sounds, you do get back what you put in it. If you are negative about it, it will just be worse. It isn't THAT bad, some days it sucks, but later in the future you will look back and see that it has made you stronger.

I did not visit before attending and I don't regret that. As much as I hate it here sometimes, that are definitely better times and plus this is an experience that I wouldn't trade. GF, we have to be honest, it sucks. The school is good and the program is good as well. Meet the right people, enjoy your time, don't forget to have fun (or at least try to find some fun), and don't think about how much it sucks and you will get through it fine. The benefits outweigh the sacrifice.

I'd just like to offer the advice to come visit and make a decesion from there. North Dakota is North Dakota and it is not going to change. It'll be a change for you if you're from a major city, but you will most likely benefit in the end by living in a new place and seeing a new part of the country.

i got a pretty good scholorship at Riddle when i went years ago.

Hey if ya don't feel like talking to them though no biggy, time is money afterall.:sarcasm:

Don't you guys have a car where you can travel once a while into the city? I am not going to local FBO I want a college experience and I think UND can offer me that. Besides, there are too many distraction in the city unlike UND where you can concetrate.

You completely forgot something that all should heavily consider before enrolling in a collegiate flight training program: A LOCAL PART 61 FBO WHILE ATTENDING A NON-AVIATION UNIVERSITY. It will save you money.

Oh yeah, you can add San Jose State University in California to the list. They have an aviation program, but I wouldn't personally recommend it.

My advice is this. Please visit Grand Forks, North Dakota before you decide to attend. In fact, visit Hatton, ND or Clifford, ND to get a taste of what you will be surrounded by. They are full of ignorant, sheltered people (which you can't blame them for...look where they live), although very down to earth and friendly (hello! 1997 called, they want their haircut back!). You will be attending non-aviation classes with these people, with aviation classes being made up of people who are more cultured and "with the program". If I visited Grand Forks before deciding to attend UND, I would've fled like hell back to CA and gone to SDSU and trained at the flying club I am a member of now.

But, after looking back, I think it was a good experience. I made a lot of great friends and felt the flight training at UND was top notch. The climate change adjustment process wasn't really that bad. Just dress for the weather and meet a lot of good friends. Meeting a good group of friends will help you get through living in Grand Forks.

Florida institute of technology(FIT) is very good too. I know a couple people that went there that loved it. One of the schools I kinda wish I would have checked out before making a final decision. Don't read that as me regretting attending this school, because I don't, but more of I wish I would have looked at ALL options rather than jumping on the first thing I saw.

Best advice ever!!! Seriously, there are way too many people who get here and decide that ND sucks, and that they can't live here for 4 years. Visit so you know for sure... Seriously. Oh jeez.

In fact, visit Hatton, ND or Clifford, ND to get a taste (like literally, eat hotdish) of what you will be surrounded by. Like I said I am not visiting :) but I know when fall comes I be coming visiting this topic saying how stupid I was lol

It's good to visit if you are still trying to decide between places. If you have already made your decision and are committed to it, why waste $400+ for a plane ticket. :whatever:
