Delta cuts SkyWest flying

Ahh, actually, I think it is downright disgusting that any flying over 8 seats is done by these 'regional' airlines.

Dude, you know we're friends and everything, but thats gotta be the most ridiculous thing I've seen you say.

If it weren't for the Majors contracting out the flying, then none of us Regional tools would have JOB. How would anyone get to a Major? The military route?

You were hired low time as well, but your attitude is like you want to pull up the ladder behind you and when you get to a Major flip the bird to the guys flying at the Regionals. Stop looking at the Regionals like the worst thing to ever happen in the industry. The Regionals created jobs. Despite you're thinking that the Regionals take jobs from Majors, this is true to an extent, but the Regionals have also created jobs, they've helped expand the domestic short haul market. Sure they might be evil in some ways, but they are good in others. You'd still be towing banners or flying 135 Freight if it weren't for the Regionals. You certainly wouldn't be a 121 Captain right now. Accept the fact that the Regionals are what they are, outsourced labor. But they are also stepping stones to better jobs. The Regionals might take away some Major jobs, but they keep the competition for those jobs high. The Majors will never give away their coveted money making routes. Never. Your job at a Major is not in jeopardy to some outsourced Regional. Maybe those less profitable routes, but who cares. If the aren't making money, why not get rid of them and send them to the Regionals?? Save your bottom line.

As far as Colgan giving me a chance, sure they did. My choices were go back to ATP or come to Colgan. If Colgan didn't hire me, it would have been back to instructing and thats fine to. Either way, I would have made it. Colgan was looking to hire warm bodies, just so happens they thought I had the experience. I don't owe them anything, and they are what they are. I wouldn't say you warned me, you helped me. You gave me a heads up about a lot of things, but you were in the middle of the Union drive and had a good positive outlook for our future. I was hoping for the same. Just because Colgan hired you with low time, doesn't mean you owe them the world on a Golden platter. You even say it yourself that this company is ridiculous. Just look at your recent situation and how they gave you a bunch of crap about making a smart and well thought out decision in the airplane. They would hang you the first chance they get and you know it. You're just a seniority number to them and now the company is under the influence of management with much worse of an attitude towards the pilot group.

It sucks you are in a position where you can't leave yet. You're short on the time to move up and you'd lose too much to move lateral. You're stuck until a Major calls your number, but they will. I hope it comes soon for you. But seriously, look at Pinnacle/Colgan as it really is, you don't owe them a damn thing my friend. If I can help you get your stuff in at Continental through my friend, I will do it in a heartbeat to help you move on. You know that.

China, India, or Africa here I come.

LOL!!!!!!!!! Funny as hell, man. Sad part: might not be a laughing matter in another 5-10 years.

But we're American's, dangit! Let's work together and persevere through this hardship! But where do we start.....? (No, hybrid cars 'aint gonna fix this one.) Personally, I figure I'll go into farming. Can't go wrong with getting back to grass roots, right?

By the way, everybody: Back To The Future is on HBO now. Let the quotes begin....

Dude- I literally said that word for word two days ago to a buddy. Our prediction is if it does hit that level, look for EVERY carrier out there to be furloughing.

Southwest(hedges running out soon, I like they're 70% hedged for $50 per barrel for 08')
Delta
United
Continental
northwest
jetblue
Virgin America(may cease operations)
Air Tran

At 120 per barrel, NO ONE is immune.

with the exception of FEDEX and UPS!!!!!!!!!!! They will hurt, but not to the extent to furlough.

You know Omar, not sure how it was over at Skywest, but during the Colgan ALPA drive I had a ton of guys tell me that they were not voting for a union because...

"...colgan is a place where you get your time fast and move on to a major. I won't be here longer than three years before I move on. Why would I pay 2% at this level when I am not here for a long time?"

Looks like they might be wrong!

I agree, we've got a serious recession coming our way.

They just need to let it happen already. Government aid packages for foreclosures, rate cuts, etc. I know they're holding off on pulling the plug until after the election but IMHO the government is doing more harm to the economy by dragging out the uncertainty. Our economy is inherently strong, it will recover.

But I agree, when it happens, it's going to be big.

Airdale,

Dave a few things. I am NOT flipping anyone off behind me. The way regionals can go bye-bye is a national seniority list, interviewing as a pilot with the union itself then them placing you and finding you jobs, etc. There are ways around this contracted outsourced flying. We as pilots are our own worse enemies. We should be looking for ways to get rid of it. Ways that would help us as a whole both short term and long term.

I think that way would be a national seniority list.

You are right, we don't owe our company ANYTHING. We do a professional job day in and day out and the way the company treats us is like you summed it up nicely numerous times.

They gave me a chance, just saying that. I guess what I am saying is just don't be to bitter at the company long term if that makes any sense. Forget 90% of the 'minor' Colganoscopies and remember the really good 10% of them.

That is all I am saying :)

This is exactly why I have a backup plan. This might be like the fall of the Roman Empire. The powerful USA flat on its back. When all hell breaks loose Im abandoning ship. China, India, or Africa here I come.

Eh, we're a global economy, and the US is the largest exporter or importer on the planet (forget which one).

So, a very serious ression, or even worst case senario, a serious depression would wreak havoc across the globe.

Not sure what the effects would be, but they would be signifigant and definitely felt!

In short, there might be no real escape!

You are right to an extent.

Just remember where you were when they hired you. Either instruct back at ATP or have an opportunity to move to a 121 carrier. I warned you about it, yet you still took the job. You got an experience here and are moving on. Good for you, but really no need to continuously beat a dead horse about how things are here.

I only did a lil' beating when I was still there. I aint gonna lie, I miss the flying sometimes. I had some difficult times at Colgan, but I will always appreciate the time the spent there. All you guys make me feel guilty for flying a 70- seater. As much as I agree that most of the stuff we do should be mainline, its just how it is right now. We can't all fly Beeches, Saabs, and Dashes just aint enough to go around like there was 10-15 years ago. Maybe Saab will open production up again for the Saab 340C (Helicopter engines will be optional)

Airdale,

I don't think seg is necassarily coming down on the regionals, rather than just trying to say the jet flying belongs to the majors.

I remember reading an article about the guy who was responsible for deregulation and how he gloats everyday when he sits at home. Oh how I wish i could spend a few hours in a locked room with him.

Well said my friend. And I agree that a National Pilot Seniority list would be a great solution, if not anything else, a great way to bring stability to the industry for us pilots. Its a great idea, and I agree 100% with you on it. The hard part, is not every company is ALPA. You would need a united Union across the industry, which is a challenge in and of itself.

I won't always be bitter at Colgan. In fact, I'd say that more of my issue is with how the company does business rather then the bitterness issue. I just look at the Pinnacle pilots and the situation they are in WITH ALPA, and it just makes me sick that Colgan is run by the same tools now. I haven't been there long, but I noticed a HUGE change in the way the company was operating around mid summer. Crew Scheduling got worse, the schedules got WAY worse (more deadheads then flying, 12+ hr duty days with little flying time etc.). I'm sure the "old" Colgan, the place you've experienced before the buy out, while not the best place to work, was much better then it is now.

You just seem so bitter towards the Regional Industry as a whole, and I just don't look at it that way. I see how the Regionals are a double edged sword, but I also see that I wouldn't be flying pax around right now if it weren't for the Regionals. So its a love/hate thing.

Oh and btw Mark, RJ's ROCK!!! :rawk:

:p

When everyone starts talking like wall street economists we can all rest assured that we are all wrong and nobody knows what we are talking about. Pilots are smart, but in a mechanical aptitude sort of way, if this wasn't the case we wouldn't be flying around Riddle Jets for 20-45k a year.

Now back to what we know.... CARLS JR. $6 BURGERS ARE THE SHIZZLE!!
I try to eat at least two per week.

I want to see how profitable everybody is when Delta is running an MD-88 between ATL and MGM with oil at $120/barrel.

Wow - well, that's one way to approach it.

For the record, I want no part of an industry that treats it's customers that way.

So my airline and livelihood should be threatened so we can provide service to unprofitable places???
