Slow page loads and Posts

Here's a wierd one for ya. My laptop (wireless) crawls on JC, yet my desktop (same network just hardwired) is blazing fast.

Try this..
When you are experencing slow page loads right click the page and select view source. This is the raw html that the server is sending to your browser. If you scan through the text you will see that the page has loaded but it is yet to be displayed. I think that it is the javascript loading the ads.

57ms from your tracert is good.

...and from AZ.

I click a link (any link) and I only get a blue page with "done" in the bottom left hand corner of the screen.

I have to click "refresh" or click on the toolbar numerous times before the page finally loads!!!

A bit slow loading; especially initially. Here's my trace...

yeah, i've noticed some pretty good slowness both yesterday and today...

so far, hostway has offered the suggestions of buying a 2nd dedicated server saying that mysql is taking up all the processing power....interesting considering we probably don't match up to some of the greatest commercial websites and their bandwidth/processing...i know we need to find a solution and soon...so i'll be bugging the webmaster once new years is past. It needs to become his number 1 task.

but anyways, it might come down to having to prune the forum and getting rid of a few years worth of threads. I kinda wonder what would happen, if anything, if we did that... would it even be worth it?

Things are dreadfully slow at REI right noe. I dont have access to terminal so I cant give a trace route though.

Im not really sure if deleting old posts is going to fix the problem. They might be taking up more diskspace, but I doubt the archives are accessed as often as the fresh content which is probably where most of your bandwidth and mysql connections/problems are coming from.

I also dont think you would need to get two servers. Maybe upgrade to ONE better server but getting 2 servers for this site kind of sounds like they are just trying to sell you more to get you off their backs. I would check the stastics on your server and consult with someone more knowledgeable than myself to see what to do.

Did you guys start pruning it yet?

I've just realized that's a very stupid question. But I agree the forum's loading so fast! Could be because it's New years and everyone else is out partying though.:hiya:

Man it's SLOW tonight...not sure if the site is just super busy...

Thanks. TInkering with some settings on the backend of the site...

Dough, just wondering. Did you remove the "Who's in the Forum"/"Who's in the Thread" indicators for page load speed concerns?

I work with databases. At work, we have some that hundreds of millions of rows. Very slow! The larger the database, the slower the queries, unless you run some massively parallel system, such as Google. Any database of any size simply must archive old data.

Do you know how big your databases are? Are all threads stored in one table? Very active areas such as "General" should be purged, perhaps placed into a table all its own. There are other ways to speed up databases, but I would suppose that if your databases are configured by vBulletin, they would be fairly optimal.
