Ratting someone out

Gone West
Is there a way to report somebody that is lying on their medicals and have them pulled in for review?? Hopefully get their medical yanked.

A guy at the airport was joking about his condition and how "what the FAA don't know wont hurt em". It sounded like some sort of narcoleptic thing where he falls asleep randomly and is out for a little while. "Thank God for the autopilot" he said.

I share airspace with this accident waiting to happen.

And that's the reason why 75% of all aviation related accidents are due to the lack of pilot judgment skills (www.asf.org). Did you get the tail number on the aircraft? If so, I would start by searching the registered tail number on the FAA website. Find out who the plane is registered to, and then take it from there.

Yeah, this isn't exactly something minor. That's a real threat to the safety of others, both in the air and on the ground. If I heard someone admit that, I'd do whatever I could in my power to report this guy to a local inspector.

Get the FAA investigating his rump. I can't stand idiots that knowingly put other peoples lives on the line because of their stupidity.

Lack of morals, ethics, or just plain stupidity... whatever you wanna call it, its just plain selfish for someone to put themselves and the public in danger by not disclosing some condition that could incapacitate them during the operation of an aircraft. Good on you for trying to out them BDhill.

You can call the Regional Flight Surgeon's office or the Aeromedical Cetification Division in OKC and report anonymously. They will ask your name but it will not be revealed to anyone if you chose to give it.

So, in this case, what would happen to the individual being reported? Can the FAA demand medical records? What if the individual has never been seen by a doc for such narcoleptic episodes or has never reported it to any doctor? There would be no record of it. Can the FAA force a person to undergo a maintenance of wakefulness test on the anonymous report of just anyone?

I'm all for reporting people who would lie about such a condition, it's obviously unsafe for not only the individual but everyone he shares the air with. But what, really, could come of reporting him?

The guy was asking around looking for a hangar to rent and started talking to one of our Instructors, I actually only overheard the conversation. He said it was a 182, but I don't think the plane was there at the time; so no tail number. I know his first name, but not his last. I think I can find out though, he knows some people on the field that I can ask.

If there are no records, there is little they can do as far as I know. If he lies about it on his medical and they find out, OUCH - $250,000 and/or 5 years in the Federal pen and he loses his pilot certificates. The FAA does not do this lightly and if you have ever dealt with Federal prosecutors, they have all of their ducks in a row before they do anything. There are certainly plenty of safeguards for the pilot here.
