What's the difference... MP3 player or "Monitoring" the ADF?

Re: What's the difference... MP3 player or "Monitoring" the

I like to hook up my cell phone to my headset and use the built-in FM receiver. I also have the option of switching to MP3 mode whenever there is nothing of interest on the radio.

you cant listen to music while you fly, you have to be following along on the enroute chart keeping track of actual groundspeed as well as fuel burn with your E6B

Well??

Seems some of the "oooh-I-wouldn't-listen-to-an-MP3-player-in-the-cockpit" guys are the same guys who know what is on ever single ADF from here to TimBukToo..

What makes the ADF ok and the MP3 player taboo?

J

Depends on your FOM.

At my airline, we're not allowed to use unauthorized portable (personal?) electronic devices in the cockpit which would preclude you from using an MP3 player.

I haven't the slightest if we've got any verbiage about monitoring ADF stations. At least in most of the planes I've flown, that'll make you deafer than a Iron Maiden concert.

Keep in mind, it's not what you think is acceptable or practical, it's the rules of the carrier you signed on to work for. If your carrier allows it, use your discretion. If your carrier does not allow it, use your discretion but don't expect to use the 'oh, come on man! it's a silly rule!" if you get written up, a fed knowledgeable about your carrier's FOM reports it or your captain says, "put it away".

For example, I think the hat rule at my airline is goofy, however, I knew they were anal about hats when I applied, so therefore, I wear the hat.

Neither action is acceptable, for the simple fact that you are not being paid to listen to music/sports/whatever.

Well, that's bad logic. You're also not paid to eat enroute, have conversation enroute or do Jepp revisions enroute.

Know what sucks about the new e-175? No ADF....

Re: What's the difference... MP3 player or "Monitoring" the

Just curious, where do intercoms that have built in audio inputs fit in. I mean they obviously are approved if they can be installed and they do mute the audio when the radio or intercom is active?

Personal aircraft..

So you are saying that you can't have and intercom like this in an FBO rental, a corporate jet, or a part 135 airplane?

The reason I asked was because I flew for a company that had them in most of their airplanes. Besides that, the ones we had were TSO'd, so couldn't they also be installed in just about any airplane??

ADF?

Did you confuse that with ATF? :sarcasm:

oh Automatic Direction Finder:D

now it not very 'automatic' dont ya say?;)

"needle points to the station" say it again "needle points to the station", there we go. How hard was that?:banghead:

No "homing" to the station!

No, you can stick an intercom in all the above.. Pretty much anywhere but a 121 cockpit.. Who knows, there may be provisions for it in 121 flying, but I doubt it..

We have in dash CD players in our planes. (C 414/421)

I love it!

professionalism stinks

Re: What's the difference... MP3 player or "Monitoring" the

The only advantage to iPod vs. ADF is the iPod won't show up on the Flight Recorder. All radio receptions are taped.
