requesting quick help with teardrop entry holds

alright... I seem to have all of the holds good except the teardrop. Well I almost have it, except after I pass the fix, and go left or right 30 degrees, I get confused about which way to turn to intercept the radial again... is there anyone that has a 'trick' so I know which way to turn?

for parallel, after you line yourself up with the fix and go outbound, you always turn the opp of the hold pattern. but I can't seem to get anything that'll make me turn the right way after I have flown a min passing the fix.

anyone know what i'm saying? if so I'd appreciate any tricks you guys have, its currently kicking my ass :(

I can figure out which way to turn if I visualize the hold, but I want to do it without having to visualize anything....

sooo anyone? :)

You are going to turn left or right when you cross the fix for your "30 Deg" teardrop, turn the same direction to rejoin the course inbound.

At least that should work, but I'm tired and the brain might not be working right, and as always here the disclaimer is stated, there is probably some obscure situation where it wouldn't work so make sure you study all possible holding fixes in the world and know where it won't work (dripping with attitude).

Alot of properly entering the hold is visualizing the pattern itself and what is required to maintain within the protected area. When making the 30 degree turn from the outbound on a teardrop entry you're flying toward the outbound course (through the protected area). Hence, you're turn to intercept the inbound course should always be in the same direction as the holding pattern....right turn for standard hold, left turn for non-standard....a turn in the opposite direction would be a somewhat modified parallel entry. Hope this helps but as the last person said, it's late, my brain is tired and I may not be completely accurate

Dugie had it right; you'll turn the same way you turned to initiate the entry. This is also true of parallel entries.

hmm, yeah... it does look like the same direction of the hold is.

i just drew a few and it seems to be that its always right? (right as in correct)

parallel is the opp of the turn.. if its left turn pattern, you turn right to intercept

Haha, now you're confusing yourself...on a teardrop the turn to intercept is the same direction as the holding pattern....for a parallel entry the turn to intercept the inbound course will be opposite direction as the holding pattern (left turn for a standard holding pattern)
I think what they meant above is that your turn to intercept the inbound course will be the same direction as the turn used to initiate the entry (30 degree turn for teardrop, or turn to parallel outbound course for parallel entry) Make sense?

I hate holds. can I just go in circles instead?

I hate holds. can I just go in circles instead?

During a quick moving snowstorm in BOS that temporarily halted arrivals, I once heard a US 73- ask:

US: "Do you want us to hold somewhere or can we just fly around out here a bit?"

Controller: "Nah, you're fine right there."

I'm still trying to find that in the Pilot/Controller Glossary ;)

Think about it like this, You have crossed your fix, made your turn to 30deg off your outbound course , NOW, your just on an outbound leg! Once your set on your new 30 correction start your timer, at one min make your norm turn to inbound (in the case of standard right hand turns make your turn to the right intercept inbound course.)

hmm, nice! yeap... that means always same way as the hold pattern is :)
