Old paper certificate expiration?

I've searched the FAA's website for an answer to my question, and I wasn't able to find one.

I still have one of the old-style paper certificates. Is there a point in time when those will no longer be valid, and must be replaced with one of the new plastic ones? I'm not talking about expiration of the rating, but rather expiration, or invalidation, of the actual piece of paper.

I don't think it will ever expire, but if you ever get a new certificate or rating you will have to give up the paper one and get a plastic one.

I wish I would have requested a new certificate before I had to give the FAA my old paper one, it is like a collector's item now (or at least would be to me).

I just helped my Father in law get his plastic card to supersede his paper A&P certificate from 1972

Nobody asked him to send in his old one though.

You're supposed to surrender the actual old certificate?

Mine's been replaced a few times now, once for address change and once for a name change and I've never had to surrender the certificate!

In good news the FAA is taking less than 119 days to get you your plastic card. :banghead:

I just got my plastic AGI card and did the FSDO on september 20th. So thats 54 days

Sooo - to keep that old one, order a new one for $2 because you lost the old one . . . ;)

Understood :D

To surrender the one I have that is considered "current" wouldn't break my heart, but for purely sentimental reasons I wouldn't want to surrender the first one I was issued, with my old address & name on it :) I'm pretty sure it's in our firesafe with my logbooks...... Guess I should make sure!

I really wish I had kept my old PP certificate . . . it was just so cool!!

I heard that the FAA was talking about making the plastic mandatory eventually, but I haven't seen anything on if or when.

I had one of the old paper ones and I told the FAA I "lost" it so I could get a plastic one. It's so much easier to take care of!

I got my first plastic one free because I sent in a form requesting FAA to kindly stop using my SSN as a cert. no. I have my old paper one filed away for posterity. As far as I know, that's still a "free" way to get a new one if your SSN is on your cert.
