Ramp checks

Is anyone else getting ramp checked every time they fly? In my last two flight I had two ramp checks, I'm afraid to step out on the ramp, it's almost like they watch me and when I step out it's like sharks coming for fresh meat. It doesn't take long but it's just annoying and why is it that I keep getting checked. :banghead:

Yeah and I had to repeat my call sign 500x today too. Weird day...but I did my first instrument approach so that was really fun, made it all worth it.

I've never been ramp checked, aside from one time Dana coming up and asking if my student and I had everything. I said, "Yep, we've got it all" and he left!

And that is after going through 102, 221, 222, 323, 325, 414, 415 + CFIing!
You must just be unlucky when it comes to being ramp checked...or UND might be getting ready for an inspected and just making sure everyone is ready.

Ah...wasn't the TSA coming soon to inspect? (anyone else get the e-mail? or was I just dreaming?) That might be a reason...

I've never been ramp checked either. Seems like you've had bad luck. :p

Today i thought?

i have been ramped once and it was at CKN and i was the only one around :(

I got ramp checked my very first flight for 102 and that was it. I remember getting the email about the TSA last year, but every time I see them at the airport it is so they can eat at Wings.:panic:

I got ramp checked at UND twice in 5 mins by the same person.

He showed up, asked to see policy and procedures and such, I showed them to him he left. I continued the preflight and he showed up 5 mins later with the exact same intro "hi, how's it going? Can I see your policies and procedures and other certificates?"

I was confused...but apparently not as much as he was

Yup same exact thing except it was on a different day. I was asked for safety polices and procedures. Today he checked my safety polices and procedures and my "up to date" sectional. I saw him walking out on the ramp just as I was walking out...I was expecting it, but he went to a different plane...then came to me. :panic:

Never got ramp checked in 102. But it seems this week is just not my week. I have a flight tomorrow I'll make sure I'll be ready to start the engine at a moments notice when I see him. He can't get me if my engine is started. :cwm27:

The weird thing is that he didn't ask for my weight and balance or performance or any of my certificates.

i was ramped by one of the FAA guys from the FSDO. as i am climbing out of the plane i see him walking over flashing his badge, i about #### my pants thinking i must of just done something horribly illegal. after he introduced himself he did a very very thorough preflight on the airplane and then inside he checked out my certs. He tried to convince me i couldn't be flight instructing with a Class 2 medical that was on its last few months (of the 36, not the 12)

I wasn't aware the current charts are required for flights. Expected, recommended, urged, yes, but required? And while we're on the subject of things I should know right off the bat without actually having to ask, student pilots are only required to have their SPC with them when they're soloing, correct? Can't find anywhere in the regs that says they have to have it...

If you look somewhere in the SP&P, it does mention you need a current sectional in your possession for every flight.

One of the only changes I can recall in this area was last year, somewhere around June/July when Grafton airport changed its name to Hutson Field. Apart from that, I can't really recall any changes to the sectional.

They ought to have that NOTAM for that unlit tower southeast of here permanently printed unto the sectional....poor FSS guys have to read that thing in every single phone call. I tell them to skip the unlit tower NOTAM, they usually have a laugh and appreciate it, haha.

so at UND you need the sectional, but "in the real world" you only need information pertaining to the flight, which if you are doing VFR-pilotage, you wouldn't neccessarily need a chart if you are familiar with the area (you could argue.)

right?

i would like to see the exact reference, because i wasn't aware of this either.

yeah every time an instructor has tried to tell me i need this or that chart (which im not planning on using) i have to question it.

the general answer i hear is that the UND SOP's are an extension of the FARs (similar to like a pt 121 op spec) so if it is required by SOP, its equal in the eyes of the FAA.

this came up a few nights ago when i was heading to FSD for 325-86... i was like yeah i dont really need that chart (omaha) as i already looked up the info online.

instructor said we needed a current chart on us for UND compliance.

anyone know whats up?

i hate to admit, but i have the policies at home and just read through them. there is no such reference

- i do have a 7am flight or briefing in the morning though

Before I get jumped on, my mistake was not referencing it as a requirement for all solo flights, only. Dual flights are not specified. I stand corrected.

Reference: 9.5.1 in your P&P. I'm not making it up...

so is my other assertion also correct that if mr FAA comes up to your plane as you are preparing to depart and asks to see current charts, and you state, dont have any with me, going VFR today and I am familiar with the area and/or have supplementary materials/print offs, etc, would that suffice as "available information pertaining to the flight"?

because im sure we all have a friend back home who goes flying without bringing a chart along and a 100lb bag...right?

wait a second. i just answered my own question.

in the DECA we dont bring CRAP. we are pure VFR, familiar with the area, and UND allows us to fly that way so it MUST be ok right?
