Flying Career......

Yeah, not so much…. I admit I was eager and didn’t care about much, unless it was flying. After much consideration, research, reading, talking, fighting…. It is no longer an attractive way to go. I am not going to spend thousands of dollars, sacrifice time, my family, my life, to start out making 18k a year. I am one-year away from my MBA… I just got an AWESOME job. Awesome Pay, (Enough so the wife can quit her job) Paid travel, amazing benefits and people. Don’t think it’s worth it anymore. The industry is Garbage, the pay is horrible… I still fly for fun and will be purchasing my own plane next year. I can do what I love with-out all the sacrifices.
A lot needs to change in airline industry before I again will consider it for a career.. I hope you future pilots find it, and enjoy it… It’s just not what it used to be anymore.

I feel that way sometimes and it makes me wish I'd done something different..

I hate being gone and all that jazz, however, I think one day it'll be worth it.. If I can make it out of the regional tier of flying, it'll be sweet.. :)

We'll see...

The most important thing is to be happy with what you're doing, if it doesn't make you happy it's not worth it. The aviation industry will never get any better though.

Not with that attitude it won't!

It is going to double in size in the next few decades. It's partly up to employees to drive their own working conditions in the right direction.

Well I hope you do brotha!! good luck, I hope you can make it work for you and that you're happy, that is what counts the most. Its just not for me anymore. But hey I am close to my ME, and I'll be happy being a weekend pilot. I took a trip to Vegas two weeks ago in a brandnew 180T, I didn't have to pay a dime! I 6 hrs in it. Fun Fun plane!

Congrats!

Yea that's awesome. Go make a bunch of money, enjoy life. You can always pursue your aviation career when the kids move out and you get bored :)

Do us all a favor and compose a letter to the hiring managers/CEOs at various airlines. Tell them what you just said and maybe, just maybe a few of them might start to *get it*

Congrats on your choice and position! :)

Don't you think you'll always wonder what it would have been like, though?

This is my concern. I've two offers on the table that both approach 100k - neither flying planes. I'm 27 and have passed on like opportunities in the past BECAUSE of the flying gig -- I'm finding it VERY hard to do it again.

I know where you're coming from Eagledriver :banghead:

It’s always sad when the aviation community loses someone with such a positive outlook on life…

Wow.. I think if I could get an offer of that kinda $$ and live in my hometown, I'd be allll over it..

Yep. Flying is one thing but making good money while living in my hometown would have to take over. Nothing beats making good money and living in your hometown with close friends/family, not saying it's not possible with flying but it's harder.

Living in your hometown gets old after while, if you never ventured out. Now if you're coming back from living away, that's different. There's something to be said for seeing the country/world, too though. A comfort zone can be great, but spend all your time there and when middle age hits, mid life evaluation time hits you like a mack truck and you're looking to make changes and step outside the comfort zone.

But I as a middle ager also think he's onto something right in his decision, assuming he's young (to a middle ager, young = less than 35 yrs old): Make dumpsters full of money during the first half of your life so that when you hit middle age and the old mid life state of mind starts nawing at your outlook, the wealth & affluence you built up over the years in the comfort zone offers more options for the change you'll be itching to make.

:yeahthat: We don't need any more grumpy captains to listen to. If you don't like it now, you won't like it in 10 years and you definately won't like it in 30.

Good for you for discovering that fact early. Flying for the fun of it and doing something that makes good money on the side is the way to go.
I'm an airline pilot and I enjoy what I do. The money is finally getting "good" (used loosely), but flying for a living begins to take the luster out of it.

The happiest pilots I know are doctors and engineers that fly on the side. I wish I was one of them!

:yeahthat: I agree. Like almost anything in life I suppose, its mostly what you make of it.

It's not the attitude, it's the facts. Pilots used to be like rock stars when only rich could afford to fly, now that everyone and his momma is a pilot and tickets cost $99 you be the judge. If you think pilots are about to be rock stars again good luck :D
