The Big Plan - 36 year old career changer

Well, Well, Well!!! It seems that some people are questioning the rights of vets to use their benefits. Since this attack was brought about by a man who probably was of enlistment age during the Vietnam Era, I wonder what basis does he have to inflict such an assault on the EARNED rights the we maintain as veterans.

When any person on this forum, who is not a vet, can leave their home, go to a hostile foreign country, stay there for a year while enduring mental anguish, watch people die, burn alive...I tell you what-when they can hold the hand of one of their friends as they lay dying and still say that veterans do not deserve these rights...then I will yield my stance. Until that day, which by the way will never happen, you Pinko-commies should stand down.

If being a veteran gets me first in line on a job...then by God I have deserved that right. If my 12 years of selfless devotion, to a people(Americans, who really don't like me or the constitution I swore to protect against all enemies, foreign and domestic), help prove my worth to a company executive, then that is awesome! While all you who are/were overpriveledged, overafraid or overindulgent were back home living the good life, all of these veterans were(from every war) serving their country while you were at home enjoying life. Bleeding, crying, suffering and killing are just a few words that come to mind every time I think of veterans.

Do not bash our rights. Do not bash our priveleges. Do not bash our devotion by posting BS like what I saw here, Mr. Creepy. I sometimes am sickened to know that I served a people who do not care for or about their warriors when they return home.

It has been an interesting conversation so far. As for the original conversation… I would say a master’s degree as compared to a bachelor’s degree will not matter when you are a low time pilot. I would put your money into the most economical FBO you can find. Get good CFIs for a fair price. Use whatever you have leftover to cover your first few years of low pay. Good luck in your endeavors.

About the veteran’s benefits…. As someone who has used their benefits; I do not have to be accountable to how I spend those benefits, Mr. Creepy. If I choose to spend them getting a Computer Engineering Degree or going through a 141 school you think is crap, it doesn’t matter. Yoda spelled out the ways veterans earned the rights, but in the end, they are my entitlements. End of Story. There are really great ways to use the VA benefits in the aviation world, and not so great ways, but no matter how you slice it, it is my choice.

I was 16 when we pulled out of Viet Nam in 1973 LOL

"Well well well we have someone who can't do math!"

I enlisted in the Airforce in 1980, headed to Texas for boot, went through the medical and it was discovered I was allergic to wool. Standard issue socks are wool

4-F

In 1985 I received a letter that the new contract for the USAF now issued cotton socks. Went back to the recruiter who was thrilled to have me back but pointed out that at 28 I was too old for pilot training, but he could get me a "non-pilot flying position."

I went to my congressman to get a waiver. He made it very clear that if I wanted to go to Annapolis he could get me an appointment. I made it very clear that I had already finished college, did not want to go to sea in a ship with a bunch of men (this was before co-ed ships) and could he just sign a waiver so I could go to Langley for USAF OCS.

He refused. "Those age limits are there for a reason."

So I went the CAP route in 1987.

As for being accountable as to how you use your benefits? YES YOU DAMN WELL BETTER BE!

I know why I wanted in to the military, and 99.9999999% of everyone else wanted the same thing. We wanted the benefits. We were willing to trade 6 to 20 years of our lives (and maybe our life) for a chance at an easy ride. I wanted to be a pilot. The aspect of serving my country was there, but it was NOT the #1 priority.

If you try and tell me you went military because you felt a "civic duty to serve your country" and weren't looking out for your own best interests, then all I can say is ...

I would insist on written contracts from you in every business deal and you have a great career ahead of you as a used car salesman!

That has to be the most unpatriotic, ignorant, selfish, [SIZE=-1]wrong-headed, and inflammatory statement I have ever seen on ANY forum. That you could have such a dim view of our military and those who serve is shameful.

skidz - Sorry your thread got hijacked. Squawk 7500

SteveC - Could you split this topic to move the lively discussion of Veterans Benefits to a new thread? :argue:

This will let skidz have his topic back.

Well Mr. Creepy, it looks like we have a difference of opinion. I am okay leaving the topic as it is as. I am not sure an online forum is the best medium to debate this.

As for Von Fonk, I would spend your hard saved cash on FBO training, try to get your ratings quickly and start working your way up. You shouldn’t spend too much more 35k to go through CFI at an FBO, at least I didn’t, if you go everyday it shouldn’t take you more than 6 months either. After that, you can save your cash for your low pay years, or go for the Masters. But choose whether you want to be on the pilot side or the management side and go for it full tilt. Good luck in your endeavors.

It's my tax money. And as I recall, congress has not passed a law restricting free speech.

You sir, are out of order.
