The Big Plan - 36 year old career changer

Thanks for the feedback.

Does anyone think a masters in aviation science at Embry would look more attractive to potential employers? Maybe help give a little bump in salary?
ROFL!

Sorry I shouldn't laugh - but you should be aware that the only people who respect Embry-Riddle in aviation seem to be Embry-Riddle grads. The rest of us tend to look at it as a rip off.

Would you believe me if I said I should never have left engineering? I didn't think you would.

Just to let you know, once you are a jet pilot, life is still the same. Only now you are away from home 4 nights a week and never see your family. Think about it.

Even if the military paid 100% of it?

Not only would we laugh but we would be damn angry about that. "The Military" didn't pay for it - MY TAX DOLLARS DID.

I certainly don't know all of the details surrounding your circumstances, but here is my 2 bits.
At the regional level, I believe the masters degree will be overkill if you really want to be a pilot. Not sure if the legacies really care that much either. (Someone may have better info on that than me. ) Use that $$$ for survival during your first lean years as an FO. Personally I think if you already have a 4 year degree then do some research & see if you can find a good, reliable FBO or small flight school that won't take you to the cleaners financially.
I did the career change thing at 30. 4 year non aviation degree, went the FBO route. Spent something like 35K on ratings. (Private to MEI)

As a Vet I take exception to that one. That GI Bill is paid in blood, sweat, tears, mud, muck, and the $1200 each service member puts in to it that many never use.

You served this country, it should help pay for your education.

I have no problem with paying for education.

But paying for some scum sucking airline, so you can fly in the right seat of a trashed 1900 that MESA DISCARDED?

No.

And you say this because you served in which branch, and which campaign? Otherwise, you have no business in stating your opinion about things you obviously know nothing about.

It's my tax money. And as I recall, congress has not passed a law restricting free speech.

You sir, are out of order.

Ah hah. If my comment to you was out of order, I would like other vets to tell me that it was out of order. Fellow Vets....how does Mr. Creepy's "thoughts" on how we apply our GI Bill money grab you?

Remember...as you are getting shot at and doing our country's dirty work and risking your life.....there are tax payers out there that are entitled to speak to how we spend our GI Bill money.

I have neither the time nor the inclination to explain myself to a man who rises and sleeps under the blanket of the very freedom that I provide and then questions the manner in which I provide it. I would rather you just said "thank you" and went on your way. Otherwise I suggest you pick up a weapon and stand a post.

Funny how all of you yell "free speech" until it appears to be against something that YOU believe in ... funny thing.

First of all, I am NOT against vets or military. I am against FOOLISH and WASTEFUL use of vet benefits however, and spending money on Embry-Riddle or Gulfstream and flooding a market that is already flooded with unemployed labor (pilots) is foolish and wasteful.

Take that any way you want, but if you think because you are a veteran that you have a right to TAKE A JOB AWAY from someone else ....

Well I just don't agree with that.

Embry-Riddle is one of the best aeronautical universities in the world and people have right to flood the market with any degree they want. Market is changing too, what is flooding today will be in demand tomorrow. What's your point?

All right gentlemen. Time to take a breather.

Too much material of the last few posts has been emotionally based rather than quantatative. Lots of spice, not enough meat and potatoes, to obscenely mix metaphors. People are reading more (much more!) into statements than is actually written. I see the potential for some good dialog where people can express their (conflicting) viewpoints on this topic, but it needs to be done in a less antagonistic way.

Time out is hereby unilaterally enacted.

Well, it was a short time-out anyway.

As long as we can all stay away from personal attack kind of stuff we'll see where this goes...
