I haven't sent in my deposit yet, so I can only study what I can download online.

Can anyone suggest which FAA publication I start reading first?

Instrument Flying Handbook
-or-
Instrument Procedures Handbook

I did self-study for my instrument rating and got a 95% on the written. I would strongly recommend the Jeppensen Instrument/Commercial text. I read that thing front to cover before anything else and really felt like it explained things in an excellent manner, and provided a great foundation. You can pick it up for $60 on half.com

I believe ATP is going to provide me with all the Gleim publications, PTS, FAR/AIM, checklists, etc. once I put in my deposit.

I'm not going to send my money in untill after my first-class medical exam, so I've got about 2-3 weeks that I can read the free FAA publications from the internet.

I'm going to read both of these books eventually. I just wanted to know which one to start first.

Instrument Flying Handbook -or- Instrument Procedures Handbook

I'm 17.5% done through the King Instrument Test Course. I know that this is a rather expensive way to go ($275) but it is helping me a lot. I know some people can just get a book and read it but for me there is no way I could stay on top of that. I did these DVD's for my private and I think that overall (although the videos can be boring at times) its pretty damn good.

I too agree these tapes are great. All the King videos can be rented at www.justplanevideos.com for a fraction of the price of buying them new.

From what I've heard, the Flying Handbook covers more basic stuff then after you read that, the Procedures handbook

IFH and Procedure book are both excellent. It really depends on if you are looking to just pass the test? or do you want some real knowledge?

The Gleims are great for memorizing stuff quickly and passing the test, but not much more.

I intend to read everything ATP provides me after I send in my deposit. Until then, I'm going to start with the free stuff off the FAA website. All I was looking for was a recommended reading order.

Looks like:
1. Instrument Flying Handbook
2. Instrument Procedures Handbook

Youll get the Instrument Flying Handbook from ATP. But like DE727UP said, you can download it for free online since its an FAA document.

They just recently updated it too.

Ben,

Good luck on your studying. You and I are in the same boat; I sent in my deposit about 10-days ago and have been studying like a madman recently. I start in Bowling Green, KY for the 90-Day ACPP program on November 26th and plan to have all the writtens done before leaving for class.

You can start practicing shooting ILS's with microsoft flight simulator, and that text. Seams to me the ones who have the easiest time with the instrument portion are the ones that have been playing flight simulator for a long time.

Been doing that for a while. It works great, but I've found a glitch in the software that if you change airplanes mid-flight, the altimiter gets reset. Crashed into the ground when I should have been 1000 feet up.

Couple questions:

1) What version of FS are you using?
2) What kind of approaches do you set up and fly for instrument? Where do you set the weather mins, etc?

FS 2004 The Century of Flight

I've been doing VOR, VOR-DME, and ILS.

I usually set the ceiling a hundred feet above the minimums and use the minimum visibility.
