colgan route changes on the "HUB"

I logged on to the hub this morning and saw an interesting article from USAirways talking about downsizing PIT. IT says that the CRW-PIT run will cease 11/3/07, and that the following may change:

syr-pit from 2 a day to 0 by Jan 08
BRadford-pit from 1 a day to 0 by jan 08
clarksburg-pit from 1 a day to 0 by Jan 08
Jamestown-pit from 2 a day to 0 by Jan 08
Johnstown-pit from 4 a day to 0 by Jan 08
Morgantown-pit from 2 a day to 0 by Jan 08
parkersburg-pit from 3 a day to 0 by Jan 08

all of these with the exception of SYR are eas routes, and according to USairways, it will be up to Colgan to continue to operate these routes on their own if they wish. It will be interesting to see if Colgan tries to change some of these over to United, or pulls out of these cities all together. Air midwest operates 3 EAS routes out of PIT, and has decided not to continue those routes.

interesting reading to say the least. I posted the usatoday link just to make sure i'm not posting proprietary information.

edit: I also missed the IAD-pit runs. I think we do 3 or 4 a day, down to zero if chosen by colgan.

They aren't downsizing PIT, they are closing it. There were 33 mainline flights a day out of there and they are dropping it to 22. No reason to support a full base any more. It's too bad really. PIT used to be the fortress hub of Airways. It has been a VERY long and slow death for that airport.

Interesting. AWAC uses PIT to get ORF crews into the system, looks like they're going to have to come up with another solution.

You could always do what we do and deadhead 16 to 20 crew members at a time on a 50 seat jet.

I was at PIT a few months ago, during the summer season and it was like a ghost town. The Captain I was flying with asked the controllers what was going on with all those empty gates. They told us Airways was pulling out slowly. So where will Colgan position it's crews. I always see those Saabs when I come in there.

That airport has the scent of death on it. Everytime we go in and out of there, I kind of feel bad when I see that broken down old Airways building out there. De-ice is a snap though...

Re: colgan route changes on "HUB"

And the funny thing is Deice was a snap even when there were 50 airplanes in front of you. Ah, the good old days.

The worst of it is my company is furloughing 350 ground staff both at PIT and the other 4 airports we work ground services for.

Re: colgan route changes on "HUB"

Was in PIT yesterday, and we were talking about how sad it looked. You can tell it used to be this huge, bustling airport. Now it looks like it's barely holding Class B status.

Yeah, STL is a sad, too. But it's not near the ghost town PIT is IMO. De-ice for us a little different there. We use the FBO on the north side of the airport instead of the de-ice pads. Ironic since the de-ice company in PIT is the same one we use in DTW, and they kick ass.

For sure. On the American side, we park on the inner alley of the C-concourse. Taxiing past all of the old derelict D gates just makes you wonder why AA doesn't want to at least make some money by leasing the gates to another airline. There are like 35 gates not being used on the D concourse alone.

I've heard that it's very close to becoming a Class C.

PIT tower is always willing to handle small training traffic. If you hear the calls signs "Moore" or "Phantom," those are local flight schools getting traffic advirsories, to help keep the numbers up.

I remember back in late-2000/early-2001 connecting through there and the place was packed. Airways jets everywhere. They used to bring the 757 up from MCO. It was a great airport. Even when I started with Colgan in 2004, they were using the E-gates. It's just sad to go in there now.

MCI is just like that too.... its pretty sad. I remember jumping on TWA through STL going to MSY a few times i was a mad house house. TWA was a great airline as far as jumpseating too bad there gone!
