American Airlines Provides Contract Proposal to Pilots' Union

DALLAS (AP) -- American Airlines Inc. presented its pilots' union with a contract proposal Tuesday that wouldn't raise the rates of pay for pilots, but would let them increase their income by flying more hours.

The proposal was outlined in a meeting between the airline, owned by AMR Corp., and union negotiators. It comes a week before the Allied Pilot Association is set to lay out a revised contract proposal of its own.

"We're looking at it, and we'll have a response in the morning," said pilot Kevin Cornwell, a spokesman for the union.

The union's board of directors began meetings Tuesday to develop a revised package to present to the airline.

"Today's proposal allows our pilots opportunities to increase their W-2 earnings and provide them with better scheduling predictability and flexibility," American spokeswoman Sue Gordon said.

Gordon said Tuesday's proposal addressed a number of areas that pilots had identified as important to them. The proposal includes letting them raise their pay by flying 82 hours a month, compared with the current ceiling of 78 hours.

"This provides voluntary opportunities for pilots to increase their earnings," Gordon said. "And it gives us the ability to boost our efficiency and be more competitive."

Also, the airline would provide "sequence pay protection" for pilots whose schedule is disrupted by weather, air traffic control issues or other problems.

The reserve system, in which many pilots wait to be called for trip assignments, also would be improved.

Also, pilots could fly routes as long as 18 hours, which would allow some international flying like from the Dallas-Fort Worth Airport to China, which is prohibited in the current contract.

The proposal comes more than a year after the two sides begin meeting for a contract extension. The contract will become open to changes in May 2008.

A strike?

Bah. Bushie wouldn't let us strike in the Spring of '01, claimed we were "vital" to the nation..... He said point blank he'd issue a PEB if we did strke.

Copy that, the only way anyone is going on strike is if managment wants them to (see NWA MX).

For the record, a PEB can only delay, not prevent, a strike. Getting the NMB to declare an impasse and allow a strike in the first place seems to be the insurmountable hurdle these days.

(and in the interests of fairness, Bush may have threatened a PEB, but Clinton actually issued one at American)

Unbelievable. So management's solution to fixing their pay issue is for the pilots to fly more hours?

Look, I hate to say it. I really do. But I would love to see pilots get together and literally put some of these Airlines out of business. Completely. American Airlines? GONE. You want to run an Airline? You better take care of your employees. Same for Northwest. Management is never going to give in, the pilots will never get their salaries back and cycle will just continue with both sides unhappy with the other.

The government should not be allowed to keep companies operating that don't deserve to be operating. The worst part of it is, I feel really really bad for the AMR pilots. I've spoken with a few of them on ocassion, and I wouldn't be surprised if half of them just walked up and quit anyway. The one guy I talked to was already working at a side business he started, he was already planning on leaving AMR.

Title is misleading. Nobody ever wants a strike

Not true!! :D

It is masterful spin - by "allowing" pilots to fly more hours, thus gutting a contract that controlled hours in order to provide for QOL. Plus what Joe Six Pack reading that doesn't got "what? they work 77 hours a month, hell *I* work that in a week and a half with mandatory overtime".

On the other hand, AMR's pilot utilization is horrible and if they want to survive it's got to go up.

But as other's have said - nobodies striking nowhere.

This has to be the craziest industry to get into. Has anyone ever taken that ride on the bus to and from the employee lot? It has to be the most depressing conversations that one can hear. Everyone from Majors/Nationals/Regionals comparing how much this job/management sucks. Yet i couldn't imagine doing anything else.

Well said, I too hope to be miserable soon enough! :)

Let the 2 engine taxi and APU running marathon begin!

I don't see the AA guys ever striking. You've yanked gear for 17 years to finally upgrade? And now a strike? NO.

You're a 30 year dude pimpin' the 777 for 3 trips a month? F up the retirement? NO.

I've ridden on that bus quite a few times. If it is the employee bus at CVG you are referring to.

Yikes. Forgot all about that bus. :)

After a while I figured it was cheaper to take a Lynx bus from the apartment than pay for parking every month, though.....

Comair pays all the monthly fees for employees, so I never had to pay a dime!:nana2:

Yeah, oddly enough SWA had us paying for parking. $34 a month deducted from the paycheck. Not sure how we got screwed on that deal, considering XJT and PCL both paid for my parking in MEM. I do know the SWA pilots didn't have to pay for parking, but I'm not sure about the FAs.
