Headsets at the Regionals?

Funny. I totally know what you are talking about. The Brasilia is just plain loud, so anytime I sit in the highly ergonomic jumpseat of the RJ I always think to myself how quiet things are.

Anyway I use a ANR Lightspeed. (Mostly because they make me look like Princess Leia. . . Well Princess Leia if she was 6'4" and was taking lots of testoserone. :D ) Used passive for my first year in the Bro. Should have bought the ANR sooner.

The 727 is freakin deafening at highspeeds and the a/c diverter set to the oveheard. It isn't too bad when we are below .82 and have the a/c set the the floor vents. I am stuck using an ear piece since there are no intercoms on our 72's. Hopefully, I can get out of them without too much hear loss.
 
I go with the ear plugs under a non ANR headset, volume a little higher and it works great.


Company provides earplugs for our passengers, and I use them as well... my trick is I take the little baggy they come in, open the top, compress the ear plugs (through the bag), and fill the bag with water. I let them expand on their own for the 20 seconds it takes to get to the back and dump the water out in a trash can. It sounds weird, but it adds some moisture to the ear plugs and is a very large difference in comfort.


This is on a 1900C. I also keep a little stash of ear plugs for when we're in the bush and passengers ask about them.


Edit: My headset is an Avcomm, I'm happy enough with it that I might just forego the fancy name brands to get their ENC headset. The built on PTT is great.
 
What happened to the commuter pilot that was stealing headsets from the planes and selling them on ebay?
 
Well I finally got the chance to go fly with my friends DC H10-13X and it was a little odd. The ANR did really good in cancelling out the noise but it made the radio communications sound rather weird; or apparently I am just used to having PNR.

Any similar experiences?
 
When you can afford it, shell out the money for a good headset. Whether CFI'ing, Turbopropping, or RJ'ing - you can't buy back a loss of hearing. You'll thank yourself in 10 years when you're flying a nice comfy large jet and can still hear the guy next to you.

I recently upgraded from a cheapy passive headset to the H10-13X's. I understand what you're talking about with the radio comms sounding differently...but you just have to get used to the fact that the ANR is blocking out most of the low sounds. Overall, I love the headset...I've been flying like crazy for the past week and they stay comfortable on the 3+ hour flights. The ANR makes the trips so much less fatiguing and I can turn ATC and the intercom down real low. Fantastic headset for the price.
 
I will repeat this for the 100 time as many other people have. You only get one set of ears so don't screw with them!

As soon as you can make yourself take the plunge and buy a good headset. Doesn't have to be a Bose, just a good headset ANR if you can.

I know of several guys that have had hearing loss just spending a thousand hours instructing in a 172.

As for the ear plugs under the headset thing. I know a few guys that do it but honestly I cannot see how it is comfortable and you have to have the radio turned way up. I can see this as a short term solution until you can afford a better headset but not something you should be doing all the time.

Quite the opposite, actually. It is neither more comfortable or less comfortable because earplugs don't protrude out of your ear and touch the headset at all.

Having the radio tuned way up? Yeah! That's the point! All of the airplane noise and wind noise drops down to a quiet level so you turn the radio up and hear ATC more clearly.

This is a long-term solution to preserving my hearing. The plane I fly right now has almost no bass noise so ANR would not do as much as it would for prop planes.

I see; I loved the headset other than the weird sounding communications, but I guess that is something I will have to get used to. It was very comfortable and the ANR worked great.

I use the ones that are in the airplane though I do have a pair of ANRs but I forget what they are called. I don't want to carry them around all the time so they're on the floor in my closet or something.

It is QUIET with the earplugs and headset.
 
Anyone have the telex stratus 50-D's? I have them and want a second headset for pax.
Thinking about getting another brand but might stick with telex.
