Well, Im just getting back from the OBAP convention and...

I had to oppurtunity to meet to JCer's. I met 777forever and I cant remember the other guys screen name (show yourself!). Both were pretty cool guys.

I got to talk to every major in the industry with the exception of Delta and American. I just ran out of time. I did talk to some of there pilots though.

Heres a little something that is going at some of the airlines from the information that I gathered. Everything is pretty much from a 135 perspective since thats what I'm doing.

UPS-They are starting to hire again and the Transoceanic experience requirement is going to be lifted. They like 135 pilots!

FedEx- Pretty much the same old same old. They are not really hiring at this time.

Continental- They had the biggest booth there since they were sponsoring the event I believe. They are hiring like crazy! I saw a guy that I met at a NIFA flight team competition about six years ago. He went to Daniel Webster if I recall. He was just getting his commercial then and now he is an FO at continental. He spent only two years at TSA before getting hired at Continental. The recruiter kind of insinuated that 121 time is more heavily weighed as compared to 135 time. She went even further and said that single pilot 135 TPIC time is weighed lesser than 2 crew 121 time. I never really asked what was so special about 121 experience. I'd figure I pose that question here later. I felt a little insulted by that but if thats what they want. This was not be the last carrier I heard this from. I later talked to a pilots from there and got mixed bunch answers to that. Some said stay where I am and get the TPIC. Others said bail and go to a regional. I think I'll take the first 1.

American-They are starting the get there flow through rolling because they've gone through the call back list.

JetBlue-They are hiring and were looking for 121 experience also. The pilot I talked to was a really cool guy and told me to not let it discourage me and apply anyway.

Airtran-At this time they are looking strictly at 121 PIC time. The recruiters sayed that it's subjet to change very soon.

Alaska-They were actually holding interviews at the convention! From what I hear. They really wasn't interested in single pilot 135 PIC time.

United-They will be hiring again in the near future.

US Airways- They were there buy there are not hiring.

Astar Air Cargo- They fly DHL. Minimums were 1500hrs, but they were talking about 5 years as an SO on the panel!:panic:

FlexJet- They love freight pilots!

Airnet-They are giving anybody and everybody those ride alongs! They really digging to pilots. Pilots waiting to get 1200 hrs is becoming a thing of the past.

Just about all of the regionals were there. I even saw Chuck Colgan and his HR staff in person. They were interviewing pilots today I believe.

So what I did gain from this? My time may not be as golden as it has once been. But (a very big BUT) I enjoy what I do, I get payed decent to do it, and I am going to do it for at least another 1.5 years. As far as getting hired by a major goes....I'll cross that road when I get there. They may say that I wouldn't be the most favorable candidate now, but that may not hold true for the future. My goal is to try to get a couple of type ratings out of Amflight and a free ATP ride.

If the majors don't want me, the fractionals and corporate world would love to have me. I can definitely live with that.

Re: Well, Im just getting back from the OBAP convention and.

Thanks for the update KLB. I wanted to attend but couldn't make it this year. Do you know where the next convention will be?

Re: Well, Im just getting back from the OBAP convention and.

Doug wants to know as well...He's been wanting to go, has been asked to go but this year, work got in the way.

Re: Well, Im just getting back from the OBAP convention and.

Thanks for that read Kevin. Where was the OBAP convention held at?

I recently signed up for NGPA and plan on signing up for OBAP!

Thanks for reminding me and giving me some motivation...

Maybe the emphasys is more on the CRM?

Interesting. I met a 777 FO on Monday afternoon who said they still had 2500 guys on furlough and they'd NOT called them all back yet.

Re: Well, Im just getting back from the OBAP convention and.

Alaska does, in fact, conduct interviews at OBAP and WIA (Women In Aviation) conventions. If you get invited to SEA for the sim ride, you're hired unless you really dork it up. If you are an RJ Capt., you don't even have to take a sim ride, you're hired. Virtually all of the pilots we've hired from OBAP and WIA site interviews have been very successful at Alaska.

MIAMI!:nana2:

Thats the thing. We learn and fly all of our aircraft single pilots and two crew.

What some of the hiring folks is failing to understand is that I use just as much CRM and, in some cases, even more CRM than if I was flying two crew.

It's not cockpit resource management anymore. It's crew resource management. That includes everyone. Not just that person sitting next to you. ATC, dispatch, maintenence, and other AMF pilots in other aircraft are all a part of my crew on any given flight. They are all inclusive in my decision making process.

I will be getting awarded a CLR(CRM) scholarship that was being given out by United. It was given out by United. It's a one day course that will held in Denver sometime next year I believe. They said that I was overqualified for it, but they gave it to me anyway.:) The course is more focused towards the 250-800 hour pilot. I'm going to use it as an oppurtunity to stick my face around their headquarters and get noticed!

I really came unprepared for this conference. I didn't even have any resumes with me. I payed $15 dollars to use to hotel computer to type up a resume to get that scholarship. Although I wasn't qualified for the companies I was talking to, everyone wanted to see my resume. And I didn't have any.:panic: Always Always Always have a current resume on you. If you go to the supermarket...have one in the car!

I will be qualified for a lot of the scholarships next year. There are companies that give out biz jet type rating scholarships at this event. Continental and Southwest gave out 737 type rating scholarships.

I am looking forward to NJC2007 now! I have the days off. I still need a place to stay. So let me know if anyone needs a roomate.:)

Oh yeah. If you were thinking on going to Great Lakes because of their quick upgrades...Word on the street is that continental is not hiring great lakes pilots anymore because they were not making it throuh training. Thats the word on the street!

Re: Well, Im just getting back from the OBAP convention and.

Great Lakes folks don't have trouble getting through training at Alaska, so perhaps that isn't the real reason at CAL.

Re: Well, Im just getting back from the OBAP convention and.

3 of our pilots had a booth set up there. I haven't talked to any of them to find out how it went, but it sounds as though it was a very impressive conference.

Re: Well, Im just getting back from the OBAP convention and.

You might be right. I'd heard about Great Lakes on more than one occassion from the continental folks.

The weird thing about my convention experience is that you could ask ten different guys about careers advice and get ten different opinions. Some told me the ditch the 135 and go to a commuter that will upgrade me the fasted. Others said stay where I am and get the 1000TPIC and the type rating. Some said go to a quality regional and some said go wherever would get to 121 TPIC time the fasted.... even if it meant Mesa, Great Lakes, Gulfstream and the like.

I talked to you guys! I've always been impressed with Wal-Mart flight operations. I don't think that you guys are hiring at this time. I am going do the online application for a number of companies including yours! Your guys were one of the ones that told me to stick it out and get 1000TPIC before I made a move.

Re: Well, Im just getting back from the OBAP convention and.

I find that weird about CAL seeing two pilots from AMF have gone there in the last year. Me thinks it was more of who they knew at CAL.

I still haven't heard of any metro guys getting on with a major yet.

Re: Well, Im just getting back from the OBAP convention and.

Yeah. It's funny because the guys that I know who have gotten on at Continental don't have very much PIC time. They both were FO's at the regionals! So they are telling me that a 121 SIC is better time than 135 turbine PIC?

They're full of it. Keep doing what you're doing, worst comes to worst then you come out here to regional world and get 6 months of that crew, EFIS, FMS blah blah blah time that people talk about and tag it on to your resume.

If you can do what you're doing now, there's no doubt in my mind you can do this gig, and any airline should see that.

Alaska offered two pilots jobs in front of everybody at the awards banquet. My favorite part was when they call up all the seasoned captains to form a line and then they call up the brand new captains to "walk the line" Pretty inspiring. One of the new captains was a female UPS pilot!

Re: Well, Im just getting back from the OBAP convention and.

Was one of the really short guy?

Re: Well, Im just getting back from the OBAP convention and.

KLB great to meet ya at the bar (sorry I mixed you up with 777Forever). We have to stay in contact.

777, congrats on winning the scholarship. (when I get my times up I'll def, be putting my name out there for that type of opportunity)

I have to agree, the walking the line ceremony was impressive...Provided the best visual form of motivation of the whole week in my opinion. I'm certainly pumped up after attending.

I sat at the Alaska table for the banquet, the shorter guy was Ken (former Comair guy as I recall). The whole Alaska crew seemed really cool, even though the mins are pretty astronomical for me at this point

AJ's comedy was also a trip...(the Hennessey comment, well ya just had to be there)

FWIW, A chief pilot of a "very major" suggested Gulfstream Academy as a route to get my time up quickly to his company's mins. This was completely unsolicited advice after he asked me about my current training program, and my future goals. He also suggested AirNet as a way to get quality time in a variety of a/c. I also met a XJET Capt, and who spent time at Gulfstream. She even left her booth to talk to in front of GAs. Apparently the program has individuals that get results

Mark your calendars, 2008 in Miami & 2009 ATL hosted by DAL (no excuses Dough, JEP, hahaha)
