No, they don't open & close routinely. I mean, you could say that but it's pretty far from accurate.
ABE isn't closed.
LEB isn't closed.
They tried CMH for a couple of months, it didn't work out, & they're closing it. Hardly routine.
As for the per diem, I think you must be confused as to what exactly per diem is for. It's purpose is to cover expenses associated with working away from home. They don't pay us for it because they don't owe it to us, however we do get it when we qualify for it.
I've never actually called in sick, but I am covering for someone tomorrow morning because of a sick call. No big deal. This is the second crewmember sick call at my base this week & we've had zero problems. People get sick and companies deal with it.
I couldn't do the commuting thing. Even when we try to travel on days off I'm always real hesitant and usually make the trip back to base 2 days before my next show. That, of course, is just me though. I know people who don't even break a sweat when a flight is oversold by 10. Until I'm more comfortable with the non-rev/jumpseating thing (and more specifically its' reliability) I'll just live where I work.
That's why I mentioned the research I did prior to choosing Colgan in that last post. I believe finding a company with decent bases is as important a factor as anything else.
I've gotta go but there's my two cents. Sorry you don't like the outstation basing.
