Background check and credit

Hi people,
i was wondering, what effect does the credit of somebody has on the 10 year background check. I know when you go for the check, you have to sign a paper so they can check your credit. Does this mean that if somebody has no good credit can not get the job?

Unfortunatley so.... especially if you are talking about finance companies or banks. I think this corporate hiring process was implemented a few years ago by Ross Perot (EDS/ Plano TX). As a result other corporate entities have followed suit. His philosophy behind it is that a person with bad credit is not someone he would like working for him;however I think his reasoning is questionable.

If they wanted to they could go back from the day you started driving.

But, nobody really cares that much.

They asked me if I had any tickets. I told them . . . one 13 years ago, and one 7 years ago. They were cool with that.

Depends on the type of job your going for.

I know NetJets as well as many corporate flight departments do a credit check on you before they will offer you an interview. This is because they're trusting you with credit cards, booking hotels, rental cars, food etc.....

I was talking about airlines only. It makes sense for financial institutions not to hire people with bad credit. But how about airlines?

Not that I'm agreeing or disagreeing with the notion, but supposedly rotten credit tends to be indicative of an unreliable employee.

Again, not agreeing or disagreeing.

LMAO

The airline folks are THE LAST people that need to be judging ANYONE by credit...

if they bring it up just ask why chapter 7 is only ok for them

What about a situation as myself where I was a stupid young adult, got more credit than I could handle, and then with interest charges and fees out the @$$ a $500 bill become $1500? I think judging someone by their credit is unreasonable. Maybe they have to eat, sleep, make essential living payments and just scrape by every month trying to land a good job for themselves? Everything nowadays is based on credit, bad credit should show how desperate you are for a good new job which would increase the employees reliability by the employer employing the individual with bad credit so that he/she may right his wrongs and move on with life. I had to pay cash for all my flying cause I had jacked my credit from being young and dumb. It doesnt mean I dont want to pay it, it means that I have weighed the pro's and con's and knew that paying off my debt would delay me significantly in getting a better job as a pilot with the ability to pay my debts faster in the end.

My word of advice:
Tell them your situation and what they will find. If they ask questions, give them honest answers. You still may not get the job, but you will leave with your dignity intact.

It is against the law to discriminate because of bad credit.

At Discover Card we pull credit simply to check if they have debt with discover card. Other than that they do not care. My CFI who now fly’s for the industry had a Ch 7 bk before he got hired. A credit check may be used to build character in their eyes. But you cannot judge character based from their credit. You could be the most honest, reliable, trustworthy, person in the world and something could happen, your wife may get cancer, and you got into debt paying for your medical expenses. You got divorced, and had to battle debt in civil courts. Bad things do happen to good people. If they see your constantly bouncing checks, or that you never pay your bills it may tell something about you, it may not. Your financial situation is none of their business, it is discrimination not to hire you because you overloaded on debt when you were young, and hit rock bottom.

If employers did not hire people with bad credit our unemployment rate would be through the roof. In Utah, 2005 1/30 people filed for chapter 7 bankruptcy. Utah has had the highest bankruptcy percentages in the nation. IIRC. So if employees refused jobs because of bad credit, 1/30 people in Utah could be unemployed.

I guess you don't want that job so bad, eh? :)

If I'm in the ER, I'm not going to comment on the trauma surgeon's chronic halitosis.

well if thats the case with credit, i'm screwed because few years ago, I was 'younger' and 'stupider' and messed up my credit pretty bad... and with the money i make now, it barely pays off the stuff I owe on it.

I would think an upward trend in credit burying some mistakes would be ok. Be sure to show you are paying it off. If your credit report shows that you messed up and are trying to sweep it under the carpet and pretend it doesn't exist, you would have trouble. I think they look for people who can own up to and solve their own problems, not people who make excuses for mistakes. I can't blame them for that, a very simple personality trait/predictor of employee ethics.

what sucks is with the money I make, I can barely cover flight school costs let alone pay for that stuff right now :(
