Lagos Hotel Armed Robbery
Safety & Security
Sub-Saharan Africa - Nigeria
20 Jul 2007

The Regional Security Office at#65533;U.S. Consulate General Lagos reported the following:

Incident Overview

On Friday, July 20 at approximately 10:20 p.m., two BMW sedans pulled up to the main access gate to the Sofitel Hotel located at 1, Bankole Oki Road, Ikoyi Island, Lagos. Eight armed robbers#65533;armed with an AK-47, assault rifles, sawed off shotgun, and handguns, exited the second BMW when the security guard opened the gate to approach the first BMW. The robbers fired one shot, which hit the building's outside wall.

There were approximately 10-12 expatriate and Nigerian patrons in the lobby bar and restaurant area at the time of the attack. Four of the robbers forced all of the patrons to the floor and robbed each systematically. The robbers noticed that two of the patrons had hotel room keys and proceeded to escort them back to their hotel rooms to search through their belongings. Having completed their search of the guests' belongings and taken what they wanted from the hotel rooms, the armed robbers returned the two hotel guests to the lobby bar and restaurant area and forced them to the floor again.

Shortly afterwards it was noticed the robbers had left the hotel premises unhindered in one of the two BMWs and a Audi Q7 stolen from a guest; the other BMW had been disabled. The armed robbers were on the premises a total of approximately 30 minutes.

Further Information

U.S. Embassy Abuja and U.S. Consulate General Lagos have noted a recent increase in reports of armed robberies in Lagos as stated in the July 2 Warden Message. As a result, U.S. Consulate General Lagos has advised its American citizen personnel and family members to take the following actions if they are the victims of a robbery attempt:

Try to stay calm. Don't make any sudden movements to upset the robber;

Do exactly as you are told, DO NOT resist or make eye contact!

If you have to move, tell the robber what you are going to do and why;

Don't be a hero. It's better to lose your money than your life;

Give the robber time to leave;

Note his direction of travel when he leaves;

Try to get a description of his vehicle ONLY if you can do so without exposing yourself to harm.

The last time I was there the captain asked the desk clerk when the last shooting was. The guy said there had never been a shooting. Turns out, that's actually why he was hired. The last desk clerk got shot.

We have since changed hotels, but it took over 2 years to do it.

Someone decided to take target practice at the Radisson in CVG a few months ago when I overnighted there. Our hotel in JFK has been robbed several times.

Airport radisson, or the one in Covington? The one in Covington is in a ...well interesting area. Gawd I hated that interstate right outside my window. At least there is that sports bar up the hill, that place seemed kinda decent. But that waffle house, that ruined all other waffle houses for me.

Wafflehouse... SHOOT, like I tell Kristie, if you roll past a "Church's Chicken" roll your windows up and lock the door because you've just enterered..... DA HOOD!

Maaaaaaan, you can't trust any of those pesky Nigerians!
Yeah, Max, tell me about it...Anyhow, about that email you sent me: I forget if I'm supposed to wire $10K to your bank account, or is it OK to overnight a cashier's check? I can't believe that govt. official has $20 million to ferret out of the country!

:sarcasm: for those who can't see the obvious.:D

Gosh, the only Lagos allowed in my house is http://www.lagos.com/ My collection is extensive! And I didn't need to hold up anyone to buy it! LOL!

Nothing but Covingtons finest. The sports bar is probably the best place to go chill. Now the Waffle House is another story itself. My wife came up to CVG on a very long layover and we decided to go to the W.H. They were cooking waffles in the back of the place.

Pictures of Lagos street life, courtesy of a fellow aviator who's been there. And yes, those are hyenas! Therese also a baboon in the background.
