Delta Airlines to announce non-stop flights from Salt Lake City to Paris

Last Update: Aug 1, 2007

SALT LAKE CITY (ABC 4 News) - You may soon, for the first time ever, be able to fly from Utah to Europe without stopping!

Several sources now tell ABC 4 News that Delta Airlines will soon unveil a non stop flight from Salt Lake to Paris.

For years, it seemed like this European non-stop route would go from here to London.

But from what we're being told, it will instead be Salt Lake to France instead.

It's tempting to say that Delta would pick a non-stop to Paris because of the romantic allure of France.

But according to our sources, it may have been picked more for economic reasons.

We're being told that Delta will use the Salt Lake airport to Charles de Gaulle Airport in Paris.

This instead of the Heathrow Airport in London.

Paris is considered by some to be a better Delta hub than London.

Also, flying into Paris is said to gives travelers better access to the rest of Europe and others parts of the world.

Reportedly, these flights may not start until next year.

And while it might be a long flight - more than ten hours it could open the doors to both international trade or business and to tourists.

Not only might this international route bring money to the airport and Salt Lake, it could also protect Delta's presence in Salt Lake by making the city an even stronger Delta hub.

As for Delta, a spokesperson said that the airline may have an announcement in a couple of weeks.

-So DT, you want to move back to your old base if this thing turns out to be true?

:laff:

That would be doofus.

LAX, yes, but SLC doesn't have a snowballs chance in purgatory, no matter the wishful thinking of the author.

I'll buy you a steak dinner if it comes to fruition as long as there's a Sizzlers or a Ponderosa Grill I can find within comfortable driving range of Scottsdale! ;)

i assume that you will be flying the 763's for these routes? or will those new 77lr's be footing the bill?

What new route? :) You're hoping I have to treat Max to a dinner at the Sizzler or something? :)

True, true. I know that DL wants to beef up LAX, they're the largest hubed carrier there I believe.

But I keep hearing talk of SLC goin' international. So what do I do, I bring all my questions right to the source!

Didn't you see Doug's earlier post about the expanding XJT flying about of SLC/LAX soon? Hello press release!

:D

no the europe flying out of lax. (if there will ever be any)

I read this somewhere, as always take at ones own belief!

What I have heard:

2 757ERs have arrived. They will be put into service in domestic configuration initially--probably some Hawaii, then will enter international service starting Jan 1. 13 of them will be up in JFK doing UK, western and northern Europe. Perhaps even some new cities--thin cities.

JFK-Tel Aviv will be announced.

Delta is expecting to be awarded ATL-Bejing, and perhaps Shanghai as well as part of the contingency of Bejing. Should be official sometime in Sept.

Fleet of 777s will double in the next 2-3 years. Also looking at some existing 777s from other carriers. Definitely 4 777s next year coming. Cairo is a candidate.

100 seater a problem. No good options. 737-700 lite version is being worked on with boeing. Derated engines, certain equipment left off to make it perform similar to emb a/c with same type rating.

Negotiations continue to acquire 13-23 or 24 md 90s in next couple of years as a stopgap 100 seater in exchange for rjs.

10 737-700s for sure starting to arrive 1 year from now. Total of 32-33 a/c over next 2-3 years

I know between now and next year, LA's got a hefty buildup already on the schedule and the talking heads have discovered that the West coast is more than just Injuns, Sea Serpents and Lewis and Clark wasn't some Yankee liberal conspiracy.

Plus, LA's got a lot more O&D traffic (people going TO/FROM LA as opposed to people connecting THRU SLC to get somewhere else).

Let's face it, there really isn't a sizeable international market in SLC. Yeah, grandma might fly to England once every 10 years, but I gather (and this is just uneducated babbling on my behalf) I gather most people would be connecting to go somewhere else.... Like LA.

united has a lot of #### going on here. delta about a year ago took all of their signs down off their hangars. i thought they were picking up. then they came out saying they want to beef up their ops out of lax. well for the most part they are doing it with regional carriers. they add some mainline flights but most of the additions are with regional carriers. united has a lot of flights all over the globe from lax. if i was to guess i would say it would be united aa then delta.

Hey, anythings possible. But not sure why one would need to have a large base (LAX), not far from their two closest hubs (SFO/DEN)

thanks for the clarification.

matt you are right anything is possible. it will be interesting to see how this all turns out. i would like to have more options to fly to europe.

But to answer the ancillary question, it'd take more than a single flight to Europe to justify a base.

For example, CVG has FCO/CDG/FRA/LGW but no ER base.

So when I do my six-day CDG trip, it's JFK-CDG-CVG-CDG-JFK. Cheaper to get the flight crew a hotel room, use local CVG flight attendants, rather than go thru the trials of opening up a international pilot base. That way when the FCO flight goes away in the spring, there aren't any displacements or international pilots sitting around doing nothing.

H Y P O T H E T I C A L L Y S P E A K I N G -- I can't see why, provided the ER has the range, that JFK-CDG-LAX-CDG-JFK wouldn't work.... or substitute ATL in place of JFK for grins if ya want.

well i know maxjet is going to use the 200's from lax to std starting this month. that should be interesting.

Well, it's only about 10 1/2 - 11 hours after a little research on the internets. An ER could make that eastbound. Westbound it's a little over 12 which I think is reachable because ATL-SVO is darned near that long.

I have no idea what kind of range an ER has, you'll have to ask Staplegun about that.

hmm it will be interesting to see. im sure it will be months or years before anything starts rolling. i would honestly like to see more asian flights.
