121 flying.. Do you listen to music?

Just curious, those of you who fly 121.. How many of you listen to your Ipod?
 
No. You should be listening to ATC. I've honestly never seen someone listen to music while acting as a required crewmember at my company. The possible exception would be 11 hours from ANC-TPE where you only need to check in every 30 minites or so and the ACARS dings if ATC needs you. That would be different. I find the busy ATC enviornment, even at the FL's, enough to demand the full attention of the NFP.
 
Nope. It's far too busy. And if the "pilot monitoring" is missing radio calls because he's jamming to Bon Jovi there's going to be some problems. Also, if he's got to say "What?" whenever you try to talk to him, it can end up being an enormous pain in the butt.

Plus, I think they're not approved for use in a lot of 121 cockpits.
 
For ya'll old schoolers, how many of ya'll read on the flight deck?

And is there a real difference? My headset mutes the music whenever there is a transmission (either on the ATC frequency or the intercom) so I've never said, "What was that? I had the Deftones turned up too loud to hear you."

That is, if I'd ever listened to my iPod while flying...
 
With a headset that mutes when atc or the intercom is active, there's really not a problem with understanding or missing calls. Even in the northeast corridor during the day. Or so I've heard.

Do you guys who use your ipods alot from relentless jogging find that hearing has dissipated over time? Thanks for the replies and I like the deftones too.
 
I think it's unprofessional to listen to music on the flight deck. However, I find reading acceptable. I'm an enigma wrapped in a riddle.
 
I like the Deftones too, but...

I think it's a lot different with a two-man crew.

We communicate with air traffic control and the other crew member through voice communication. In my personal opinion, anything that's standing between you and ATC or you and communicating with your fellow crewmember is a recipe for disaster in some cases.

Many aircraft don't have intercom systems so there's no way to prioritize the radio or the other crewmember.

Reading in cruise flight? It's in violation of the FOM at my company but there's a lot more wiggle room in that than there would be with an iPod. It doesn't get in the way of radio or crewmember communications, helps keep your brain engaged for long periods of time and it's seems less distracting.

The only thing I read is the FOM to stay legal, proficient, and knowledgable.

I don't plug in the Ipod, but may have flown with captains who do. If I had, it never would have bothered me until I might have flown with this senior guy who was really into Journey, Ratt, Boston...and for some reason old Elton John and Cindi Lauper. I drew the line when he tried to play "True Colors" over the intercom while I was flying an approach into a congested airport.
 
I'm decidedly in the "no" column. I don't let my FO's do it either. I'm not willing to bet a violation from a missed crossing restriction or the like over my or my FO's ability to listen to ATC over the music. Besides at XJT we work with a lot of really new guys and I don't like the example it would set. I choose to take the high road and do things as close to compliant with the FOM as I can. It's not worth it not to. Try conversation for a change. I know many people will ask what to do about flying with guys that don't talk but that happens so infrequently that I don't really think that argument holds water.
 
If you listen to music with an adapter that mutes the music if there's a transmission or voice on the intercom, how would it cause you to miss a crossing restriction, or stand in the way of communication between crew members?

It doesn't need to be in the intercom.

Does monitoring the ADF count?

Guys have been threatened with termination for reading (much less rockin' the IPOD) in the cockpit. You're not even supposed to read manuals or do jepp revisions. Personally I don't do it and I have no problem keeping myself occupied, even on the 3 and a half hour flights. There's no shortage of radar returns to study when you're flying in the S.E. this time of year, and out west there's usually a good view out the window.
 
I don't like it when the captain breaks out the Ipod and plugs it into the intercom. It has more to do with being forced to listen to their music rather than just listening to music.
 
I listen to music everytime steal an F-16 from the military base and attempt to free my POW father from an unnamed middle eastern country!

"That's it...you just lost an oil refinery!!!"

















If I didn't do it first someone else would have done it...:D ;)
