Went to the USAF Recruiters today...advice? is this legit?

Re: Went to the USAF Recruiters today...advice? is this legi

Army FTW,

If you have a high ASVAB the Army can guarantee you in writing that you will go to be an ATC'er (as long as you don't screw up). Army has lots of great programs and they also have the largest budget...they have mad bonuses as well!!

Plus you can enter as an E3 instead of with College and DEP advancement programs!

PM if you have any Army questions...

LMAO!:laff: Hmmm, yeah and they can't meet their quotas either! No matter if it's the Army or Marines, your primary job is being a rifleman. I've had several friends learn that the hard way no matter what MOS they are.

Re: Went to the USAF Recruiters today...advice? is this legi

As a former Marine Corps Recruiter I can tell you that you have to be careful. Like someone said the recruiters hava a quota, but with the war and all stick to your guns, make demands and you should get what you want. Recruiters are behind the power curve right now because people don't want to go to war....pick your job and tell them if I don't get it in writing then I don't sign. Good luck and thanks for thinking about serving!

Re: Went to the USAF Recruiters today...advice? is this legi

well thanks for the advice. i still have yet to talk to the other branches. i have another meeting with the USAF recruiter on monday and then i take the ASVAB on thursday.

my dad is trying to line me up in the ANG. i dont really wanna be a "weekend warrior" [or thats how ive been hearing it being called] so i dont know. he has connections high up and hes been talking with a couple people. hes a Lt. Col. i dont know how that will work out. when i go in monday, im going to make sure and demand taht i do ATC or ill say #### you and your couch! and then since its a joint recruiting station, ill just go across the hall :D

Check out military.com (http://www.military.com/Recruiting/Home/0,13387,,00.htm). There's some decent info over there.

They also have discussion boards with current, active recruiters who could probably answer some of your questions: http://forums.military.com/eve/forums

I don't know how accurate this is, but according to them the Navy is offering $15K for AC's (Air Traffic Control).

Re: Went to the USAF Recruiters today...advice? is this legi

awesome. thanks for those links. for $15,xxx, i dont know if i could pass that up! thats nice.

what are your guys opinions on the ASVAB? im not an idiot by anymeans. i survived the university of iowa and had a GPA of 3.4, im an AP scholar, blah blah, got a good ACT score..

any advice for what to study for the ASVAB? keep in mind, i havent done algebra for like 7 years. ive been doing calculus for awhile and other advanced stuff. anything to touch on quick before i take it next week?

Re: Went to the USAF Recruiters today...advice? is this legi

Umm, let me put it this way. I took the ASVAB in 10th grade and got a 90%! It's a pretty simple test. In the Navy, each particular job field takes a certain section of the test and requires a certain score for each of those sections. As long as you scored the requisit score or above on each of the required sections, you qualify for that job.

Example: (hypathetical) Air Traffic Controlman (AC) might require a 38 in Arithmatic reasoning, a 32 in Coding and a 65 in Word Knowledge.

You will have no problems with the test and should get a pretty high score.

Re: Went to the USAF Recruiters today...advice? is this legi

cool, i feel alot more comfortable about it now. as far as i know, the AF does it the same way. they look at your scores and tell u what u are qualified for based off of those and then they want u to put down your "3 or 4" desired ones and then they'll wanna stick u in one that meets their quota.

i might bring that up on Monday. ill be like, well, i think i kinda know what u guys are doing. quota blah blah blah... after all, he was trying to persuade me away from ATC and have me put others down. so we'll see what he says when i go back in there with ALOT more knowledge.

what are some questions that you would wanted answered? like super technical questions that i can test him on? should i go back in with demand at my side. i WANT to become and ATC. if u cant do that for me even though my scores permit, seeya!

*ninja edit -

so as soon as i sign at MEPS, do i start getting paid or do u have to go to basic to start getting paid? how does that work?

if i join and i become an E-2, am i already considered an Airman by rank or do i just get paid as an E-2 but am still called a trainee? [assuming its the airforce]

Re: Went to the USAF Recruiters today...advice? is this legi

I'd be leery of the "4 choices idea." Most branches seem to use it to get you into a job that you didn't want but was one of your "choices" so it's in your contract.

Air Force should be able to contract you to a job, but it could be they have enough people wanting in to do that so they don't have any pressure to let you.

With the Air Guard you are hired on by a specific unit, although I don't know how many have their own controllers.

Do you actually have a 4 year degree? 2 year? what? I'm confused from your posts. If you have a 4 year I was under the impression you'd enlist as an E-3 or E-4 if you went that route (and I assume you'd want to go in as an officer if you had one anyway).

Re: Went to the USAF Recruiters today...advice? is this legi

the air force recruiter said that based on my college work so far, i would go in as an E-2 to start. i have around 28-30 semester credit hours of coursework completed so far and he said that i should qualify to become an E-2 right off of the bat.

Re: Went to the USAF Recruiters today...advice? is this legi

quick question for u navy guys... how long are u ever at sea?

west pac '92

san diego - yokosuka: 17 days
yokosuka - pusan: 7 days maybe
pusan - singapore: crazi iraqi dictator went bonkers, Ranger no stop in Singapore.
pusan - jebel ali: 2 weeks ?
jebel ali - dubai : 42 days (circles in the gulf in support of operation southern watch) just missed a beer day.
dubai - abu dhabi: 1 or 2 days???
abu dhabi - coast of Somalia:another week maybe.
coast of Somalia - Perth: 7 days
Perth - Sydney: 7 days
Sydney - Pearl Harbor: 2 weeks
Pearl Harbor - San Diego: 7 days

During the Gulf War, the Ranger was on station for 120 days with no port calls!

Times are approximate except for the 42 days in the gulf and the trip from PH to home. Just missed the beer day and the tiger cruise was 7 days exactly. We got home on Super Bowl sunday Jan. '93. Pulled into North Island, waited for everyone to get off the ship, jumped in my car and drove to a friends house. Arrived just prior to kickoff.

The cruise kicked major a$$. Tokyo Disneyland, Mucho beverages in Pusan, had a great time in the UAE, beverages, food, gold souks, riding camels in the desert, New Years Eve in Perth with Mindy from the Dial-A-Sailor board :D, Outstanding time in Sydney. What a party town ;)!!! back to Pearl Harbor to hang out with friends I knew from being stationed there the 3 years prior to the carrier duty, and then the Tiger Cruise back to San Diego. It was a blast cruising back to SanDiego with my Dad. He was retired Navy and had been stationed on an a/c carrier (Yorktown) way back in the day.

Re: Went to the USAF Recruiters today...advice? is this legi

You can go to the Army office and get some info on the WOFT program - warrant officer flight training. Although, it's only a rotary wing program, you would have a great chance of being picked up for the program - as long as you don't have a shady past. Take the ASVAB, score well, take the flight test (I forget the name of it) and then you'll have to go to a few interviews with the batallion commander, company comander and some other officers and if things go well, you can and will be guaranteed a flight slot. From that point, it's up to you if you continue with the program. If you fail out of flight training, you could end up in a line unit (infantry) and then the suck will truly be great! Good luck with everything. RLTW!

You might get E-3 in the Navy with the cridits ou have now. I had 18 and got E-2. The Navy doesn't do that stupid pick 4 jobs crap. My brother fell for that and got #5 on his list! Of course we know he picked four, but the AF picked for him. When I went into the Navy recruiter I told hiw what I wanted to do, he showed me what matched what I wanted to do, looked at my ASVAB scores and said I qualified. I took the physical and he told me to stick to my guns and not let the job classifiers at MEPS tell me anything different or try to pick another job. He said to tell them this "I want this and if you can't get it for me, I'm gone!" I went and told them what I wanted, they double checked my ASVAB scores to make sure I qulified and gave me what I wanted and asked when I was ready to leave. The rest is history.

You won't get paid until day one of boot camp. Well you'll have you uniforms and what not deducted and you won't be able to touch your money until close to graduation.

Re: Went to the USAF Recruiters today...advice? is this legi

I don't think I saw this mentioned so I'll toss it out.

The Army is so short right now, they are taking people from the Air Force an putting them in the Army (or having Airmen running convoy escort). Just a heads up. Does anybody know if it voluntary? I was under the impression that it was not.

No it's not voluntary but voluntold! Their also doing the same with the Navy. One of my buddies is in aviation supply and got voluntold that he was going to be an "augmentee" with the Army. They sent him to Ft Jackson in S.C. for training and off he went to Iraq to augment an Army aviation supply battalion or whatever they call em. He hated every day he was there. That wasn't in his contract when he joined! I'm so glad I got out when I did!

Re: Went to the USAF Recruiters today...advice? is this legi

Welcome to the AF:) Enjoy our swimming pools, golf courses, and paperwork!

Re: Went to the USAF Recruiters today...advice? is this legi

That's about right! Ole Uncle Sam likes to make sure that all of his nieces and nephews get a little surprise here and there.

Re: Went to the USAF Recruiters today...advice? is this legi

"Air Force...Chair Force" or so ive been told by some Army guys...

oh well, get paid to sit in A/C, aint nothing wrong with that :D

meeting with the recruiter tomorrow.

Re: Went to the USAF Recruiters today...advice? is this legi

Good luck and stand strong. When I joined the Air Force, I joined with a guaranteed job as an air traffic controller. Like everyone else has said, if your ASVAB scores qualify you as a controller, there's no reason you should take any other job. Tell the recruiter what you want. If he won't make an offer, walk away!

One other thing you might want to ask about is your length of enlistment. Most the new guys coming out of tech school are telling me they had to sign for six years.

As far as basic goes, you're called a "trainee" throughout basic training.

Good luck and remember to be respectful and professional. It may help you get something you want!

Re: Went to the USAF Recruiters today...advice? is this legi

thanks for wishing me luck. i have alot to figure out tomorrow. im going to talk with all of the branches.

as far as committing to a time of service, i heard in the army its 2 years and then a couple or so as a reservist... or in the AF, 3 years active, 3 years reserve, or 2/2. ill figure all of that out once again tomorrow.

anyone have any last second questions that i should ask tomorrow when im shopping?

Re: Went to the USAF Recruiters today...advice? is this legi
