BOGOTA, Colombia (AP) - A plane carrying 59 people skidded off a wet runway and into the Caribbean Sea in Colombia, causing minor injuries to seven, aviation officials said.

The Brazilian-made Embraer 190 plane operated by operated by Aero Republica was carrying 54 passengers and five crew members from Cali to Santa Marta, a tourist destination on Colombia's north coast.

After landing Tuesday at Simon Bolivar Airport, it skidded along the wet tarmac and slid halfway into the water, civil air authority spokesman Martin Gonzalez told The Associated Press. The plane was evacuated.

Aero Republica is a subsidiary of Copa, Panama's national airline.

I believe they are a code share with Continental. Looks a lot like Continental livery.

Didn't see this thread before. This is sad news. That plane is brand new! Glad to hear that there were no fatalities.

Composite Airframe + Saltwater = write off
I think BobDuck is right. It would be bad enough if it was the old aluminum/aluminum alloy/steel frame, but composite materials usually mean a writeoff when it comes to saltwater.

It's possible the engines can be salvaged as well as some other parts.

It looks like the #1 engine would have ingested sand and water probable making that a writeoff.

The #2 engine, APU, and the wing mechanicals look like they could be salvaged. At this point it is however up to the insurance company to decide on the fate of the airplane. I would think E-jet parts would be in high demand making it a logical parts airplane.

I'm glad no one lost their life. Accidents happen in this business. But if you scroll through, the funniest thing was the FO on his cell phone.

Captain: "You better call dispatch and tell them we'll be a little late.":sarcasm:
