aerobatics: questions about 'not approved' maneuvers

I am getting a huge kick out of flying the Super Decathlon but I see in the POH that tailslides and lomcevak's are "not approved".

I was wondering if anyone has insight as to why....

Regarding tailslides, they are low load, and the plane can recover an inadvertant spin just fine....

Regarding lomcevaks, again, they are essentially just a spin/stall type move... wondering why this would pose a problem?

Any insights? anyone have any inside tips/quirks to flying the Super D?

There is a crazy guy that keeps his plane a few over from ours that has a Super Decathlon. Seriously the guy is nuts. He walks around the plane swearing at it while he pre-flights.

interesting... but doesnt answer the questions :-D

i can not answer the question, but pmd an email addy which I don't want to be public - that's the only reason

gotcha! ...and passed along the question as well. thanks!

funny though, after a few times out in the super D im already wanting something with a faster roll rate... more power.... etc etc.... i can see where this is going haha!

For you guys who fly the super D, what's that thing capable of? What maneuvers are approved? And what are the G-limits?

+6/-5

the only limitation i found in the POH states tailslides and lomcevak-type maneuvers are "not approved"

didnt say why.

also the inverted fuel tank "only" gets you a full 2 minutes of inverted time (before needing a flip to refill it)

fun plane! i feel the roll rate leaves something to be desired though.

Most of those maneuvers are not authorized due to the aerodynamic stresses put on the tail.

Try some snap rolls at 65mph entry speed... those are a lot of fun in a super cub too.

yep thats the same answer i arrived at also. apparently the tail is questionable with the loads these maneuvers apply.

id rather NOT have the tail snap off in flight.

*the more you know*

I'm surprised that Lomcevak's are prohibited but snap rolls are okay. I figured they'd be about the same as far as tail stress. Hmm.

Oh, and thanks for the info on the super D's. One of these days I'm gonna buy me something aerobatic. I just haven't figured out what yet! (Or how....)

yeah i mean, my strictly inferential reasoning led me to the same conclusions... why would these be prohibited but other *similar* maneuvers are not.

who knows. maybe call the manufacturer?

the manufacturer tested and determined it was too much stress. the tail isn't designed for reverse airflow from what i can remember.

i flew the Super D 4 summers ago and i miss it a lot

i have seen the result of tailsliding a decathlon. there was severe damage to the ruder and elevator. the guys that did it were lucky to get the aircraft safely on the ground

From what I have gathered at the two places I've flown them it is not good to snap roll the Super D either (even though it is technically approved in the AFM).
