Regardless, I flew with a guy once on a 4 day that insisted on showing me his hipped strapped firearm on every turn.
"I've got this on," he'd say, shifting his gut aside and revealing the glock.
I thought it was more for show than anything, but after the 5th or 6th time I wondered if he was telling me he had the gun or trying to intimidate me.
"Minimums!"
"Go around...or I'll blow your head off!"
 
I think it's an H&K. I just got done with a day trip where my CA was an FFDO and carried on every leg. He didn't feel the need to tell me every leg that he was strapped, as it was so obvious each and every time he had to take it off to deplane, then put it back on when the slam latch was locked. The grip design and magazine release resembled an H&K, but I may be wrong.

There are some FFDO's with "I'm a big man cowboy with a gun now!" syndrome, but they are in the vast minority. Almost all that I've flown with are conscientious, professional, and vigilant.

I'd like to go through the program myself, although I think I'm going to have to get a different holster, one of the clip-on jobs that slides onto your belt and trousers. That undoing your belt and threading the holster loops every leg is for the birds. I hope that the issued holster is not mandatory.

As others have said, if I requested a jumpseat and just happen to get a seat in the back, I will always check in with the crew. If I'm listed as non-rev and get a boarding pass with an assigned seat, I'm no different than any other standby pasenger, so I'll just take my seat.
 
Ah but here's the twist.

A lot of times these gate agents don't put you in the system as a J/S but as a non-rev. Even when I'm "jumping" on my own airline I have trouble knowing how exactly they got me on the aircraft. 99% of the time I stop in and say hi, thanks, bs, etc. On very, very rare occasions, however, sometimes I've headed to the back without saying anything as it seemed the most prudent (only when holding a boarding pass with assigned seat). And if I check in up front I always say thanks on the way out (something a lot of J/S'ers, I notice, don't do).

I commute so I always jumpseat to get to and from work and even I have trouble following the "procedures" some of these airlines utilize which is why I always (almost) just stop in and say hi/ask regardless of what the gate tells me.

But case in point, I jumped on my own airline a few months back (I usually don't jump my own carrier as an offline offers direct flights between base and home) and a month or so later it showed up in my travel info as "non-rev" tickets. Granted I wasn't charged anything but J/S and non-rev are two different things. Argh.
 
Did my first J/S today on 9E, talked to the crew before we left (had to get the CA to sign the form, but I would've done it anyways). Talked to the FA a bit during the flight (there were a whole 7 pax on the flight), and then thanked the CA again when getting off the plane.

Oh, and I also non-rev'd earlier in the day, but didn't check in with the crew...

Dang, 7 pax! And they had an open seat in the back for you? :sarcasm:

A few months ago on my way out to my interview with SkyWest, I went from MOD to LAX on an EMB 120. I was worried I might not get a seat when I realized there were 3 other pax waiting to go to LA. That seems ridiculous to me. A crew of 3 to fly 4 pax, one of which is non-rev. Sombody had to have lost money on that flight.

How do you think I get free drinks? Just pull out the big 40 cal and say "Bring the booze and keep it coming - and toss me a headset too." :laff:

Actually, if I were an FFDO, I would not travel (commute) armed. I would likely have a nice safe place in Houston to store it. ;)

You're not, I agree and it's not.
 
If I'm on a non-rev pass, I don't. But if I'm "jumpseating" even with a seat assignment in back, it's absolutely required.

BUT! Don't confuse a uniform with a jumpseater. I non-revved to PHX out of SLC one day on a connection carrier and the captain had the flight attendant bring me to the cockpit to lecture me about checking in when I'm jumpseating.

"Do you want all of us S3B's to come to the cockpit sir? There's several others..."

Doh! We actually pushed back a little late, but he sure told that Southernjets guy somefin'! :)
 
i always try and show my face, just seems like a common courtesy. also, doesn't hurt on the networking front to make a good impression and meet new people. when you ride the same carrier all the time on the same route you're bound to get to know some of the crewmembers. when its time to put those apps in it doesn't hurt to have made some good relationships.

I was always told non revenue standby, you don't have to check in. Jumpseating, you should always introduce yourself in case you end up in the flight deck.

The reason he never checks in is because he knows there's a strong chance he will be denied the JS.
