Melatonin

This is probably a stupid question, but is Melatonin something that needs to be disclosed on a medical?

Melatonin over the counter is from Cow brains. Is there any concern of mad cow?

I use the stuff occasionally as well and I too have pretty vivid dreams.

It may be from cow brains but read further here.

Sources of Melatonin
Melatonin is present in all living organisms, including microalgae (green algae), bacteria, fungi, plants, small crustaceans (certain prawns and crayfish), fish, animals, and humans.163 Natural sources of melatonin, not standardized to provide a defined concentration, and with possible contaminants, also include medicinal plants such as feverfew (Tanacetum parthenium), St. John’s wort (Hypericum perforatum), and huang-qin (Scutellaria baicalensis),122,164 sometimes reaching levels of several nanograms per gram165 and possibly contributing to the therapeutic efficacy of the respective herbs.
High melatonin concentrations are found in seeds and some fruits such as tart cherries, bananas, and tomatoes.166,167 Melatonin also is found in food sources such as oats, rice bran, sweet corn, wheatgrass juice, and ginger. It has been shown that dietary melatonin (from plant sources) directly elevates the circulating level of melatonin in the body.

I doubt many of the products list hte source of the melatonin. It would certainly be less expensive to produce from plants.

I noticed about a 9 mg dose works for me, but trying to adjust my sleep patterns works even better.

If I hit Europe, had a short nap (or none at times), then when it's time for bed, I'm out like a light.

If I land, take a four or five hour nap, I'm not going to sleep later that evening very well.

I have not.

However, some folks have suggested it!

I'll probably have no problem sleeping on break this evening as I got a wakeup call for the wrong room a few hours ago :(

Dayum man. 9 mg? I have to chop one of those 3 mg tablets in half and I am out in 20-30 minutes flat. I have some wild and vivid dreams with half of the 3 mg tablet. I would be afraid that I would pull an OJ if I took 9 mg.

Respek.

Since I fly back side of the clock, use Melatonin fairly regularly and I think it does make a difference.. Plus have to agree with the dreams too... Strange...

Hmm, I've never used any of those things and have never had a significant problem. As long as I avoid too much alcohol and exercise on the layover, I sleep fine.

Personally, I have reservations about something that is actually a systemic hormone that really hasn't been on the market that long, but that's just me!

I have used a sleeping aid called Sleep Now made by Herbalife

I love it put me out and woke up refreshed no side affects. I think it had valerium root(sp)

Wife is using a tea called camadian (sp) works great for her

I'll have to try melatonin heavy dose since Im a bigger dude.

Doug, have you tried Ambien yet, as your Avatar suggests?

Abe Lincoln and that chess-playing rodent work for Rozerem. I have used Ambien and Lunesta (not at the same time!) They work. You definitely have to dedicate 8 hours to sleep, just like they say. I can think clearly if I wake up in the 6 hour range, but as soon as I move around I have vertigo. Those effects are gone in the 7-8 hour range in my experience.

Ambien requires at least 24 hours to duty time and preferrably 48 hours. It is currently the only medication the FAA even considers near safe. None of the other prescription drugs nor the over-the-counter drugs are approved for use.
