What flightbags do you guys own? What would you suggest? I would like something large enough to carry enough items. Any suggestions on flash lights also? Xenon verses LED? Im new to this so I would like to get long lasting durable items for school.
 
I would suggest something not too large. A cheap, lightweight bag works. You'll be carrying it around a lot so the weight and bulk is important. No need to spend lots of money either. You could just use a normal smaller duffle or even a backpack.

As for the flashlight, anything works. I have just a small flashlight the size of a pen for inside the cockpit and a larger one for pre-flight. Again, no need to spend lots of money. Something basic will work just fine.

Enjoy the nice weather when you get there while it lasts, it won't be around for very long come September...I'm absolutely dreading another winter there.
 
I would say get as big of a flightbag as you can. This is because you'll more than likely need to carry a lot of crap out to the airport.

Normally this would include, Training Course Outline, a copy of UND policies & procedures (both in a green binder), and a UND ID badge (must be displayed on your outer clothing in its own holder). Also your headset, logbook, checklist & aircraft POH. Anything else needed to plan the particular flight including charts, plotter, E6B, AFD, FAR/AIM, aircraft standardization manual (another green binder), a hood or foggles and approach plates and enroute charts (for IFR), flashlights (for night ops), etc. During cold weather you're also required to have a winter coat/hat/gloves & boots. It's better to bring everything you can think of out to the airport rather than risk cancelling the flight due to not having a required item (been there, done that).

It is annoying to lug all that crap around with you so what I like to do is leave a bunch of my stuff in my flight instructor's office and only take out to the airplane the bare essentials for doing the flight safely.

I used a bag like the one Micaoct linked through my training career here. I found it to be pretty much the perfect size. It held everything Ryosuke mentioned (minus the FAR/AIM) - it was full, but it all fit! I feel sorry for those who carry around the monster Jeppessen bags everywhere, they look uncomfortable.
 
i have a fairly big jepp bag

its fits everything, but its way too bulky.

carrying the TCO in the airplane is totally stupid and unneccessary too (yes, i know its required)

kneeboard, license, medical, headset.

should be all you need for a flight.
 
A buddy of mine never bought a flight bag until he became an instructor, only used his backpack. One of my private students that finished up this past month also used a backpack. Dont worry bout the type of bag you get, just something that will hold a few items that have been mentioned before.

The UND TCO is not required to carry by the FARs so I never did. The only time I had it was when I dragged myself to a ground briefing with coffee in hand.

carrying the TCO on board is a UND SOP which is in essence an extension of the FARs

so you must carry it like the other required documents, even though its totally stupid and a waste of space.

ok back up, yeah P&P is what i meant... but its in my TCO so im not going to take it out to go fly every time, i have to lug that bulky binder around instead.
