Carrying a bike in a Cessna

Anyone have any experience in transporting a bicycle in a 172 or an a/c of similar size? The wife and I are purchasing road bikes and we have dreams of flying around florida to find great spots to ride. I know you can't mess with the pilot and front pax seats without an AME cert, but can you pull the back seat out? Naturally we would be able to remove both wheels to try and get it to fit.

Just curious if anyone had ever tried. Thanks!
 
You can take the seats out. You may have to remove the front tires to fit the bikes in. They also make foldable bikes as well.

It is a lot easier in a PA24 or PA28 to take the seats out and haul stuff.
 
You can easily fit them in the back of 172 with the rear seats out. I would even remove the seats and have your mechanic install fork mounts on the floor. Now that would be sweet!

Oh and stay far away from folding bikes.
 
Yeah, it's a club plane so I probably couldn't get away with that - but I think I can make them fit if I remove the wheels. I just didn't know if removing the back seat in the Cessna would be as easy as it is in my Wrangler.

Nice! What about one of those foot-tall mini bike things? Or possibly a Razor Scooter?

I'd go down to the airport and give it a shot. With the front wheel off, I was able to fit a road bike *behind* the back seat on a 172...but I don't know how well 2 would fit without removing the seat. Good luck!
 
Maybe take a thick moving blanket to put between the two bikes. That would help prevent damage when the stuffed behind the seat then.
 
There was a freight dawg, a Caravan pilot, I think, who used to fly with a folding bike in his plane for getting around when he had down time on his route. I can't remember the name of his blog, but I think he was somewhere in the SF Bay Area...
 
Unfortunately the road bikes are going to be the only method of transportation - we're looking to travel to group rides, triathalons, etc. I'll take them up the airport one day and try it out, though - thanks for the help guys! :)

Dude, that 172 is NEVER gonna get up fast enough to get off the ground if you take the wheels off, duhhhhhhhhhhh.......












(oh wait.... I think he meant the bikes......)
 
I THINK -- but I am not sure -- that if you popped down the seatback of the rear seat, you could get a bike in there.

I'm not 100 percent sure but I'm sure you could do it.

I wonder if I'd be able to squeeze some skis in there!
