What Is Going On?

What is with all the posts arguing about flight training, regional airlines, and hiring requirements? I see people getting at each others throats about these things, which is exactly the opposite of what should be happening. What happened to the brotherhood of aviators? Different age, I guess.

What I think is most amusing is when one pilot bashes another for their choice of regional or flight school, when both pilots hope to work for the same major airline someday. They'll likely share a cockpit for eight hours crossing the pond to Europe a few years from now. Will any of this matter then? It is like two students from competing high schools fighting about which is better, when they both have applied to the same college.

I could care less about a pilot's background, just as long as they do a good job in the cockpit and are a good person to be 18 inches away from for four days. If they have 500 hours or 5000 hours, went to a small FBO or an ATP-type academy, or *gasp* went to a competing university, I just want them to be an effective crewmember, have a good attitude, and have something interesting to talk about in the cockpit or over dinner. This job does not define who you are, it is only a means of affording the things you enjoy.

Funny, I'm listening to Bob Marley and the Wallers sing "One Love" at the moment on the ol' iPod. Go figure.

Yeah really - to each his own - as long as the FAA says you can fly the plane, and the airline hires you, tell anyone who criticizes you to mind their own freakin' business. If they don't like flying with you simply because you're low time, tell them to write the company - if that doesn't work, dust off the Home Depot apron.

I'll second that. I get tired of hearing it as well. I came from a tiny FBO in Indiana, went to Pan Am, then to a great medium sized FBO. Been there done that in the training route.

My only concern are the likes of Jet-U taking folks money and making empty promises. Academies are fine IMO as long as they give solid training and don't have unethical marketing hype (and the price tag to go along with it)

Flychicaga you are right. Its like the FBO guys are Ohio State Fans and Academy guys are Michigan Fans. All the posts including mine have been many philosophical. In the end it we all need to come together because we are here for the same thing, to Fly, to get paid well and live happy.

Therefore we need to take what others say with a gain of salt. We need not get offended because one doesnt care for where we train or how we got there. We can defend where we go but at the same time must realize others have been there, done that and/or are where you want to go. Therefoe we cannot get upset when thsoe who are out there are trying to help us make a right choice. I think too many of us get too upset too quick because we and or others may bash on your ATP, Skymates, Ariben, Purdue, OSU, PanAm, FBO or what not. Lets face it there isnt a PERFECT route out there and there's not only ONE place where you can get MULIT and make it in this world.

I've been reading these posts religiously for the last week. There are alot of opinions & views. I'm glad to see this post because the last thing I would want to do is be labeled because of my training. I will say that there seems to be a school or two that you need to watch out for as far as "empty promises" and as a newby, I appreciate the warnings. I'm still reading and listening !!! For those of you that haven't read my posts, I'm 57 years young and want to fly 121. With the the pending age restiction change, I've had a few schools say no problem however, I don't want to waste time &/or money if 121 is not realistic. I did have 1 regional ask for my resume' (don't know if that means much)!! I have my PPL/IFR & 450 TT and plan to start on my ME this weekend. If 121 is in my future, the 'fast track' is obviously the way to go for me. I'll continue to educate myself via this forum so please feel free to continue to offer your suggestions.

Matt is right. I apologize if anyone feels like I attacked them personally. Didn't mean it that way. I still believe in what I wrote, just people out there HAVE to keep an open mind. As pilots we have to stop undercutting each other.

In the end, it really doesn't matter were you train. The attitude of the individual dictates how well the person will do in the end.

We are all pilots, it is a brotherhood, we all need to be united.

Well, you get a group of type-A twentysomething guys together, start comparing the sizes of their respective puds and these things break out.

Natural ebb and flow of an internet forum.

Plus, people (including myself) usually have questionable writing skills, coupled with an inability to convey light sarcasm and writing angry when they feel someone's bruised their ego or slighted them.

Quite natural! :)

"OMG! You said Riddle sucked! I went to Riddle! You're questioning my manhood because if you're right... that means i'm wrong! I'm never wrong! I can't handle the scrutiny, so I'll reply and reply and reply until I get the last word! The last word means I win! (insert Howard Dean 'Yeeargh')"

Great post! It makes no sense to me why people get in these arguments. Someone told me it would be great to go to ATP, I respectfully disagreed because I like teh part 61 enviornment, and they seemed like I was crazy. D I not like them? of course not, just not what I wnat to. Pilots (student pilots for that matter) arn't robots and all go through flight acadamies and all work for regionals.

Hey! We can turn this forum around and go right back to Doug's living room! Don't think I won't do it, mister!
