Southwest lowers turbine Mins back to 1000

Maybe a large application pool, but I don't think they're hiring pool even exists. We had a couple of guys in DTW get the "Congrats! You're hired, can you be here on Monday?" calls from SWA. Needless to say, DTW lost some CAs fairly quickly.

What will be a really good sign. . . is when they drop the 737 Type before class date restriction.

Once SWA starts paying for their air crews' own type ratings, that'll be a good sign.

Unlikely to happen until their applicant pool completely dries up. Requiring pilots to pay for their own required training means they don't have to have DEs on staff (which would require paying for that training, recurrent, and probably some sort of override pay).

It'll probably never happen. I'm pretty sure even before 9/11 they stuck by this requirement.

I'm not familar with type ratings... isn't it expensive to get type rated on your own in something like th B737? I know I researched a 757/767 type rating just for giggles when I was bored one day, and it was like $20k.

737 is under $10K and as low as $6K depending where you go. Due to SWA's requirements, there are SEVERAL places you can get a 737 type rating.

You can get your 737 type for free.

Get hired by Continental, get the 737 as your airplane, get typed, bail to Southwest.

Its happened more than you'd expect. Problem is you can't bank on getting the 737 as your airplane. It actually goes senior in the class as that is the fastest way to IAH and the only way to CLE. If you get the 756 or 777 you are stuck in that airplane for 2 years.

This guy is bidding 100-hour lines for the rest of 2007! Seriously! :D I'm just itching to submit my application there and actually have it accepted by the system. Next step, B737 type rating. Just need the time off.

Oh, the dream of being based at MDW again...

This little "maneuver" has gotten more than one pilot blacklisted from submitting recommendations at CAL. There have been a handful of pilots who have bailed after six weeks to six months from CAL to places like UPS, FDX and SWA. I can't exactly blame them, in all honesty. Even so, it is screwing Continental big time, and anyone who has recommended these pilots that left is blocked from recommending any pilots to CAL in the future.

They dont have a training agreement, and then go for the money if they bail early?
