Need Advice on a Difficult Student

Second, explain straight out that if he pulls crap like he has again in the air (such as not immediately following a "go around" instruction), lessons over. PERIOD. You have the controls, last time around the pattern, park the airplane and he goes home. End of story.

:yeahthat:

You must break him down. I think the FOI suggests something challenging that is out of his skill level, to bring him back to earth. Try to get him into actual IFR and let him handle it from there.

I don't think breaking the regs is a good way to fix the situation...but I know what you mean (i just wouldn't tell everyone on this forum site).

Sounds like this kid has read the books, has a decent hand on maneuvering the aircraft, and thinks he's gods gift to aviation.

How about going old school?

Spin Him! Spins used to be required for the PPL. I had to before I soloed. Remember your first spin?

Accelerated maneuver stalls, nothing like your first stall at over 45 deg of bank to humble you.

This kid needs to understand that he has something to learn from you. Right now he thinks that he is a natural and could jump in an F4 and dogfight Duke Cunningham.

True.

However, the guy who thinks spins are awesome/"1337"/totally rad but doesn't have the requisite respect for them usually ends up being a MetLife and an AVEMCO problem because they're dead and normally involve a hull loss.

Is it trouble that I want to learn spins in my training just so I have a little experience with them and wont lose my head should it ever happen?

...also, that they look really fun.

No trouble at all. I wish more people wanted to learn spins.

I agree, I did them shortly after getting my PPL, and enjoyed it immensely. (Of course the fact the I did them in an acrobatic aircraft might have had something to do with it...)

After that experience, I was no longer "timid" about them. When I later became an instructor, it was mandatory for my students to at least go do one full spin entry during the course curriculum if they wanted a sign off from me.

Until you get that ONE GUY that says "That was AWESOME" in a Chris Farley voice and asks to do it again.

Couldn't resist.
