I was thinking the same thing. But I don't think it will ever happen in corporate america, and the real passenger version of that train travels about 20% slower.
 
What do you think it would look like if a train jumped the tracks at 350 miles per hour? I'd hate to be on that train. I think our careers are safe for now.
 
They don't jump tracks like trains do here in the US. European railway is very safe.
 
Won't happen here in the us. Why? In a world where cities pay airlines to come in for jet service (true story), I doubt people would be seen getting on a train.
 
The train reached its maximum speed in about 16 minutes at a site about 200 kilometers from Paris on a specially chosen sector of track
Keep in mind that these speed are not relatively constant like an airliner at cruise. Going around corners, up over mountains, etc... They had to take it out to a nice flat straght shot to get this top speed.

Besides, coast to coast passenger rail is dead in the US, has been for decades. How much would it cost to lay tracks that could handle this sort of train from NY to LA, and other major cities in between?
 
High speed rail would be perfect for several locations in the U.S., and I believe the federal government has identified these potential corridors. Dallas-Houston-San Antonio, Sacramento-San Francisco-Los Angeles, and so on, are ideally matched. Hopping on a train is much less hassle than the current status quo at airports, so I would use it if it was avaialble (to the ire of Southwest). However, it requires government investment and therefore I'm not counting on it happening.
 
Except for the coasts, I don't see any market for this in the US due to the lower density of ppl as compared to Europe.

Personally, I think anything travelling 300+mph oughta be at LEAST 2000' AGL! :)

I'm pretty sure that was the crash they showed on the accident show on the National Geographic Channel. It derailed since they were using a wheel that reduced the amount of vibration felt on the train, but had much less durability. And 1 wheel on the train basically came apart and a string of Murphy's Laws ensued making the crash much worse than if the one wheel had just derailed. I'd find more information on it, but I'm leaving in a few minutes.

We voted on a bill not too long ago for a high speed train connecting the major cities in Florida but it was later scrapped. I guess now I know why.:rolleyes:

Yep people were complaining about vibrating coffee so they changed the wheel design. It is actually the only accident ICE has been in.

Yeah, I was still living in FL at the time. There was supposed to be a light rail going up in Orlando, but Disney is blocking it since they want it going straight from the airport to Disney instead of stopping at Universal or Sea World as well.
 
High speed rail is badass, and I think we should def start making the transition to rail for shipping goods rather than trucking. This should start happening as fuel prices continue to rise, however it will be too late!

They had this on "Scariest Train Accidents" a while back... one thing that made the accident worse is that it happened just before an underpass. The car that derailed might have been okay, but when it left the track, it hit the bridge supports and "dammed up" the track. The following cars just piled into the first one--VERY ugly!

From what they said, the engineer wasn't even aware he'd lost the cars until he arrived at his next stop! :eek:
 
I was thinking how that would look from your typical GA airplane. It would be very freaky seeing a train leaving you in the dust.

While I agree that we'll likely not see high speed rail in the US, I dont see how a derailment could be any worse than an A380 packing it in. I think that an equivilent level of safety could be reached with high speed rail I just think it would cost too much to be economically viable.
