damn, I need to find me a german girl to marry so I can get that job. I would absolutely love something like that. I'm even near fluent in German :-P

You can come over as a tourist and get a job on base that would give you logistical support. You only need to work 20 hours on base to fall under the SOFA agreement.

Check out http://cpolrhp.belvoir.army.mil/eur/index.htm or www.aafes.com for more information on getting job that would give you logistical support. Once you have that you can fly for the aero club.

That fact that you speak German is great but not required and as a independent contractor you set your own fees, you just have to give the aero club $5.00 for ever hour you teach – the rest is yours.

I might just have to look into that. I have worked for aafes before, both on a small (now closed) army base south of Munich and on Yokota AFB. I'll have to shoot them an email and ask about how much flying instructors usually get done before I consider it further. Thanks for the info!

As an independent contractor you set your own hourly rate. The aero club adds $5.00 on top of that for the aero club. Currently the lowest paid CFI makes $16.50 per hour and the highest paid CFI makes $23.50 per hour. Your pay is tax free as far as the US Government is concerned because it counts as foreign earned income.

Emu, If you want to meet german girl, come over to Detroit area(:(, I know it is not the greatest area). There are few Germans around :) due to automobile industry. Last time I heard, I believe there is a flight from FRA to PTK on weekdays

Ramsey...I've been applying for/looking for positions around Mannheim that would give me status/base ID...I also had Jennifer put me on the wait-list for associate membership.

If you hear ANY jobs at or near the airfield, please let me know. I've been looking and right now it seems like the best opportunities are in Heidelberg...I've taken the tram from H-town to Mannheim before, and I guess it's not too bad, so I guess I'll just wait and see what happens. Plus I seem to remember that tram is sometimes filled with gorgeous Studentinnen from Heidelberg going to Mannheim to shop on the weekends!!!

Unfortunately we do not have any Associate slots at the moment because we are limited to 10% of the membership. We are in the process of working with the Army and the local German Government to get the limit raised to 25% ASAP.

Where have you been looking for jobs? I know that there are tons of NAF jobs that will hire you as a Tourist and give you the ID Card and SOFA status you are looking for. The drawback is that NAF jobs usually suck and pay is not that great.

I actually just got transferred to Heidelberg, not to mention there are a lot of members that live there and commute to the club as well – once you get membership we’ll put you in contact with them, but I can guarantee you that there won’t be any “students” on those rides! J

If you are still in the states you can go with a GS job which will also pay you 30k for housing plus your salary and a Cost of Living Supplement for being in “expensive” Germany.

Let me know if I can help!

Ramsey,

just wanted to say whats up. I did some training with you guys late last year. It was fun training in Mannheim, but you do need more CFIs. I couldn't train as much as I wanted to because of it. Might want invest in another 152. I couldn't train because it kept going down as well.

We actually used to have 2 152s. We had to sell one because they were not flown enough and we just kept loosing money on them - about $20.00 per hour.

We just increased our rates due to the fuel prices...the 172s are around $200.00 an hour which really sucks. We are working on getting a waiver for the German tax which will reduce the price by about 35%. Times are getting tough everywhere!

So what are you up to these days?
