Looks like I'll probably end up red-eyeing it to JFK and doing the black chair/commuter room until a little before show. Is that a good plan or does some hotel have 'day rooms' near JFK?

Several hotels have day room rates, I would highly reccomend that route. There is no good place to sleep in the crew rooms at JFK, the "quiet" room isn't very.

Try the Sunrise, they pick-up at LGA & JFK and have recently remodeled. Kinda pricey but they take good care of commuters. Five Towns is good too, they only pick-up at JFK. Both have complimentary High-speed internet connections. Pan American is reported to be commuter-friendly but I've never stayed there.
